Eating was always an adventure in itself since the menu's are in German only. If you don't know German and there isn't a beautiful blonde sitting behind you to help you out, you could be in real trouble as many German's don't speak English. One nice feature is that most, if not all pubs and restaurants post their menu on the outside for you. The most common items to find on a German menu are schnitzel wiener (fried pork...they love their pork), pommes fritas (french fries), karoffelsalat (potato salad...one of my personal favorites), schinken
(ham...more pork...either baked or grilled) and bockwurst
(bratwurst...always good when in doubt on the other items). We found a couple of good restaurants in Dusseldorf...a typically German restaurant called Schumacher, a gay bar appropriately dubbed M*A*R*C, and a pizza joint named Parmigiano (the spinach, ham and mushroom or the salami pizza is a must try).
Here is a typical menu for you. It is from one of our famous places to eat, the gay bar named M*A*R*C. We would recommend either the Frikadelle which is a fried pork patty served with either potato salad or french fries or the Strammer Max which is ham, served with or without a fried egg on 2 pieces of toast. |
