Sonny Kamberi won the tournament with a score of 4½ points. Kelly Borman came in a close second with 4 points. Tom La Forge, the current National Amateur Champion, received the third place prize. The Class A prize was divided between all of the players with three points making it a five way tie. With a score of 3½ points, Chuck Leinen won the Top Class B prize. Terry Rowlinson, Bob John, and Gary Gill tied for the Second Class B prize. Jerry Truitt won the Top Class C and below prize, and Ken Ceterski won the Second Class C and below prize. Martha Ceterski won the Upset prize, donated by the Waukesha Chess Club.

Thanks is extended to Champion International for the use of their training center. Thanks to the Waukesha Chess Club for the donation for the Upset prize and to the Iron Mountain Chess Club for the donation of the second place prize plus all of the great homemade snacks. Gratitude is extended to Tom Ceterski and Justin Ceterski for directing and organizing the tournament.

1997 Lake Superior Chess Association Membership Meeting

The meeting was held on August 17, 1997 between the fourth and fifth rounds of the 1997 UP Open and Championship. It started around 1:30 in the afternoon with most of the players in attendance. The first issue of business was the recognition of the following donations: $100 from the Iron Mountain Chess Club and $25 from the Waukesha Chess Club toward the UP Open prize fund.

Treasury Report: As of July 31, 1997 there is $532.56 in the LSCA Checking account. Currently there are more expenses than earnings, causing in a slow decrease in the amount the LSCA has in their checking account. Most of the expenses come from postage and the publication of the newsletter. Several other expenses over the past year include the purchase of several trophies and the affiliation fee.

The dues were voted to remain at $6 per year for LSCA membership. Mike Hoffman was recognized and thanked for keeping the mailing list updated and current. New business issues included possible ways to raise money. One possible fund raiser would be a tournament with an entry fee that went to the LSCA Checking account and trophies donated by the Iron Mountain Chess club would be the prizes.

The officers of the Lake Superior Chess Association were kept the same for the following year. The current officers are as follows: President - Greg Rose; Vice President - Tom Ceterski; Secretary - John Sleeman; Treasurer - Joe Rubatt; Editor - Justin Ceterski. The date of the UP Open and Championship is planned to be held once again on the third weekend of August, but an actual date is not yet established.
