Exercising the Cerebrum

"Hey, don't back over that..."

CRUNCH

"...bike. Never mind."

With that auspicious opening, the Fall Brains on Bikes got underway, wending its serpentine way from Natural Bridges State Park in Santa Cruz, to Rio Del Mar Beach, some fifteen miles away. Nine students and Pete Wang, our advisor, rode under ideal weather conditions.

Crow and Wendé, our dear water angels, provided us with not only water, but snacks and juice. Zoë Davidson, another advisor, was there to pick up our bikes and give us a lift back to the starting area.

I borrowed a bike this semester, not having one of my own (yet), and I appreciate the lender, Tova, letting me use it. I had to get used to riding it, so it wasn't until I reached the Lighthouse, some three miles into the ride, that I felt confident.

Was it just me and my out-of-shape body, or was the pace faster this time around? I found myself grateful for every rest stop, to catch my breath and step off my bike, stretching my legs. Oh well. Next semester I'll be in better shape, and maybe I'll be like Rob, who once he reached Rio Del Mar, turned right around and rode back!
