Lets see; I'm not entirely sure how much of myself I should put up here; not because I'm worried about anyone stalking me (hey, it'd beat the boredom I usually suffer from! :-) but because I'm really uneasy with people so self-absorbed that they post the most mundane facts about themselves here on the web. Of course, I usually like to find out about the people whose pages I visit, so maybe there are people out here who really are interested in me. That'd be a shock!

Basically, I'm an optimistic cynic. While I'm not opposed to happy endings, I've seen enough of life to know that they're not the norm, and I'm much more interested in how people deal with that than I am in the 1% of the time when everything works out. Especially considering that those 1% of happy endings aren't really endings, but brief respites in an otherwise non-ideal existence.

I like movies that have a subtext, and books that exist on more than one level. Wayne's World does, at least in part (the self-depreciating "mega-happy ending"), while (as far as I can tell) Beavis & Butt-head does not. I'm more interested in directors than in actors, although I'm inherently attracted to any movie with Juliette Binoche, Sandra Bullock, or Kenneth Brannagh in it. Joel Schumacher should find a new career (although I liked St. Elmo's Fire), while Stanley Kubrick, Tim Burton, and David Lynch should be candidates for sainthood.

Everything I like about movies goes double for books--although I'm much more interested in science fiction literature than I am in science fiction movies. William Gibson and Neal Stephenson are awesome.

Educationally, I'm a graduate student in architorture at Ohio State. I should be graduating in 1999, at which point...who knows. I'll worry about it when I get there. Most likely I'll get a job in the US somewhere, hopefully in a place like Chicago, Boston, or Manhattan. Ideally (and I'm 90% sure this will never happen) I'll move to Europe, and spend some time overseas before settling down. Who knows, maybe I'll never come back! (actually, I'd miss my family and friends too much, but I -would- like to live in Europe for a few years).

Beyond that, you'll have to check around these pages for more information about what I like. Most of my interests are represented here somewhere...you just have to find it. Then again, the best way to get to know me is to email me!

In lieu of that, here's some basic facts about the physical object known as Matt Bernhardt:

Born: September 17, 1974 in Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa. (which explains a lot)
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Long and Red (and going to stay that way until I go bald)
Glasses: Yes
Gender: Male

Sorry, I don't have a picture (yet), although when I do get around to putting one up, you can bet that you'll be sorry I did... :-)

That's all I can think of

More to come...in the meantime Email me if you want to get to know me!
