Opening Leads

Later Leads
There are special agreements when leading a suit partner has signalled for.
The leader wants to convey suit length as well as posession (or not) of an honor. These are the general rules for this situation;
- With A, K, Q, or J doubleton, lead the honor.
- With A, K, or Q third, lead low.
- Leading the jack denies holding the ten.
- Holding J third, T third, or 9 third, lead the middle card.
- With three small, lead high.
- With small doubleton, lead low.
- With 4 cards, lead the 2nd highest when without a high honor.
- With 4 cards, including K or A, lead from the other three cards as if you did not have the honor.
Versus Suits
- Leading an Ace denies the King
- Leading the king promises the ace or the queen
- Leading the jack asks for the return of the lowest side suit
- Spot cards reflect attitude (high card = do not return)
Versus Notrump
When Breaking a new suit (that partner has not signalled for), do so in a Foster manner. The card led promises one higher or two lower touching or nearly touching cards.
