Garak Episode Guide - Monday, December 14, 1998 11:40 PM

[IN PROGRESS!]

With commentaries, summaries and additional little things from BGM.

If you're wondering why I'm not doing a Bashir Episode Guide, well duh. I'd have to include every episode made since season one, won't I? I just don't have the time to do it. Since this is a primarily G/B site, and since Garak is not a regular (boo hoo) on the show, this will include everything G/B and more on my favorite Cardassian.

Many thanks to Heather Cook, whose lovely site enabled me to complete my collection of piccies with those from Past Prologue, Through the Looking Glass, Improbable Cause and Our Man Bashir.

Additional thanks to Cattnip (with a rocking site), who provided some of the collection with piccies from Profit and Loss, The Wire, Crossover, Distant Voices, The Search II, Things Past and Shattered Mirror.

The pics from Distant Voices, For the Cause, Broken Link, The Die is Cast, Body Parts and By Inferno's Light were scanned in by myself.

The rest were either plucked from the net, the www.startrek.com site, or Alidar Jarok's Star Trek "Recent Episodes" Image Library.

If you see here a pic that you captured (not scanned, since it stands to believe whatever you found in a magazine, someone else might have too), please let me know, and I'll add the proper credit.

Past Prologue

Plot:

A - A reunion with a member of the Bajoran underground forces Kira to choose between her people and her duty as a Federation officer.

B - Dr. Bashir is excited to meet Garak, the last Cardassian aboard Deep Space Nine and a rumored spy.

Exposure: Not enough to qualify as a Garak Episode, but it stands on its own as being the one to introduce him, and the lovely interaction with Bashir.

Fashion Comments: UGH! Fashion police, where are you? No no no, a tailor? You wouldn't think so. Garak is wearing a dreadful frock in this episode that does NOT accentuate OR beautify him in any way.

Attitude Comments: In this episode, we see just how truly seductive and charming Garak can be, particularly when it comes to accosting the lovely Julian Bashir. His attitude is suave, with an underlining current of menace. Who would contest this when seeing him place his hands ominously upon Bashir's shoulders, or even when he snapped that Bashir 'really should come to his shop at such and such time'?

Interaction with Bashir: Oooh, enough to make my panties sweat! Here we have the beginning of a BEE-U-TI-FUL friendship, if I do say so.

Witty Reparté:

Uncovered Bits about Himself or his Past: Not much is revealed here.

1 - It is assumed that he was left on the station as the eyes and ears of Cardassia.
2 -
He still has reliable contacts on Cardassia.
3 - He owns a clothing shop on the Promenade.
4 - He's a flaming queer! Okay, so this is hearsay. Whatever. :)

Cardassians

Plot:

Exposure: Lovely, lovely, lovely! Mucho Garak in this one, and as a bonus, we get to see mucho exposure of Bashir as well. And not in a seperate room mind you! Yes, I'd say this is a Semi-Garak Episode. Hell, he had more attention than Dukat did. ;)

Fashion Comments: UGH! That green and blue frock again with the unattractive jacket. Elim, get a clue! That is NOT flattering in the leatest bit!

Attitude Comments:

Interaction with Bashir:

Witty Reparté: "There are always games, Doctor.

Uncovered Bits of his Past:

top

Profit and Loss

Plot:

Exposure:

Fashion Comments: Now he's getting better! Kudos to the fashion department. That black tunic with the lovely silver patterns highlighting his shoulders and arms is quite lovely.

Attitude Comments:

Interaction with Bashir: Unfortunately, we see very little of it in this episode. It's more of a Quark/Garak episode, if I had to give it a pairing. We have a lovely G/B scene in the beginning, however.

Witty Reparté: [following his killing a fellow Cardassian] Well some people should never be promoted.

Uncovered Bits of his Past:

top

The Wire

Plot:

A - Bashir fights to save his Cardassian friend Garak, who is slowly being killed by a brain implant to which he is addicted.

B - Hehehe, there is no sub-plot! :)

Exposure: YAH! MORE PLEASE!

Fashion Comments: Again, style prevails. Garak is wearing what I call his 'skirt'. A very long tunic, that I delude myself in thinking he created to hide possible embarassments when in Bashir's company. The earthy colors are absolutely divine, and go well with the somewhat ivory/beige color of his flesh.

Attitude Comments:

Interaction with Bashir: Well, it hasn't been called the G/B episode of all time for nothing.

Witty Reparté:

Uncovered Bits of Himself or his Past: Some major Garak enlightenment in this one! Or ... is there?

1 - He was discovered to be affiliated with the Obsidian Order in some fashion.
2 - He was implanted with a wire that essentially turned his pain into an endorphin high geared at pleasuring his senses.
3 - He has somehow embittered Enabran Tain, the former head of the Obsidian Order.
4 - His crime has dealt with either a - destroying a shuttlecraft harboring Bajoran prisoners and Cardassian crewmembers, including the daughter of a prominant official, b - , c - being framed for a crime he did not commit by his trusted aide Elim.
5 - We discover that Elim is really Garak's first name.

Crossover

Plot:

Exposure:

Fashion Comments: AAAAH! Ever since spotting my dear Cardassian Tailor in the first episode, I've been dying to see him in that authorative and sexy Cardassian uniform. My fantasy was fulfilled! And how! My my my, how well he fills those curves. And those lovely calves ...

Second Skin

Plot:

Exposure: Thank you, can I have more please?

Fashion Comments: Again, the long-skirted tunic that I've come to adore. It suits him so well - although I have a sneaking suspicion it wouldn't fit so well anymore, not with the more grayish hues they've given his skin lately.

Attitude Comments:

Interaction with Bashir:

Witty Reparté: Major, I've never seen you look quite so ravishing.

Uncovered Bits of his Past: Oooh, Boy. We were teased by the interaction between Dukat and Bashir in Cardassians. Now we get a clearer glimpse of the situation. Well, okay, maybe not so clear.

top

Distant Voices

Plot:

Exposure:

Fashion Comments: Better and better - I haven't seen any of the disastrous fashion faux-pas from the first two episodes yet. This time Elim is sporting a fitting tunic with a bourgonne consistancy, lined with electric colored patterns on the shoulders and and neck. Very fitting indeed.

Attitude Comments:

Interaction with Bashir:

Witty Reparté: "I must congratulate you, Doctor; you have a fascinating mind."

Uncovered Bits of his Past:

top

Through the Looking Glass

Plot:

Exposure:

Fashion Comments: That Oh So Sexy Gul's Uniform again. I can't get enough of it. I need more. More. MORE! Isn't he just the sexiest thing alive in that rugged look? No complaints from me!

Attitude Comments:

Interaction with Bashir:

Witty Reparté: PURSUUUUUUUUUE! (you really have to see it to appreciate the humor in this)

Uncovered Bits of his Past:

Improbable Cause

Plot:

Exposure:

Fashion Comments: We're seeing a return of Garak's skirt, which gets no complaint from me. He looks so adorable in it, especially that high collar that accentuates his neck, face and stature quite nicely.

Our Man Bashir

Plot:

Exposure:

Fashion Comments: Okay, Garak in a tuxedo = pantie sweating action. Garak in that dreadful turtle neck = not so big action. Hey, 1 out of 2 ain't bad. But puh-leaze - I know earthy tones suits him, but that shirt and jacket did NOT go together.

Attitude Comments:

Witty Reparté: Another decorator's nightmare. This era had a distinct lack of taste.

Shattered Mirror

Plot:

Exposure:

Fashion Comments: Wow! A Cardassian Uniform in ADDITION TO a collar and chain! Can I ask for more? Can I? Well, a certain young man drapped over him would be nice ...

Attitude Comments:

Interaction with Bashir:

Witty Reparté: GARAK: At least I was able to please her [Intendant Kira Nerys], now and then. || WORF: You are not my type. || GARAK: I never said you were.

For the Cause

Plot:

Exposure:

Fashion Comments:

Attitude Comments: All I have to say is 'Vamp it to the MAX, Elim!' If nobody caught the way he vamped it up on the rock, at the last scene, with Ziyal, then you need glasses.

Interaction with Bashir: You know, my hopes were really heightened at the beginning of this episode. Garak and Bashir were positively snippy at one another, while watching Kira's match.

Witty Reparté: You don't think I can do anything without some nefarious

Body Parts

Plot:

Fashion Comments:

Attitude Comments: I think this was the worst Garak episode yet. He is reduced to comic relief, it's so sad.

Things Past

Plot:

Exposure:

Fashion Comments: Yum - Garak fits Bajoran clothes far better than Dukat does in Covenant. Oh my, he sports the renegade look oh so nicely, doesn't he? Accessorized with a deadly weapon and wild hair, who could ask for more?

Attitude Comments:

Interaction with Bashir:

Witty Reparté: Giving me a name tag that read 'Elim Garak, former Cardassian oppressor' was hardly polite.

Uncovered Bits of his Past:

top

In Purgatory's Shadow

Plot:

Exposure:

Fashion Comments: OooOOooh, we're now seeing a darker Garak. In style, anyway. His wardrobe has begun to lose some of its colors as we're seeing more blacks and dark blues. I'm not complaining - he just fits it so well. Plus he looks much more menacing, doncha think?

1 - Enabran Tain reveals himself to be Elim Garak's father.

Plot:

A Call to Arms

Plot:

A - The Cardassian/Dominion Alliance is getting stronger, and Dukat thinks it's time to retake Terok Nor. Captain Sisko will not let himself be swayed so easily, however, as he plans to join a fleet of about a gazillion starships (yeah, I'm exaggerated) to bury Cardies, Jem'Hadars and Founders into the ground. By doing so, however, he must temporarily leave DS9, advising the Bajora to join alliance with the Dominion.
B - On a very tenuous sub-plot, Ziyal decides to return to Bajor, expressing her fears of rejection from the Bajora to Garak, as well as her primary concern for his own safety. The tailor tells her an elegant story of how he has come this far without mishap, and that she shouldn't take his instincts for survival for granted. Following a brief kiss, they part ways, and Garak decides to board the Defiant to ask Captain Sisko if he could join him. "Besides, I have nowhere else to go," he finally confesses, which prompts Benjamin to accept him as one of his crew.

Exposure: Not much - two scenes, really. The dreaded Garak/Ziyal kiss, and when he shows up on the Defiant asking Sisko if he could join him.

Fashion Comments:

Attitude Comments:

Interaction with Bashir: None whatsoever, but as Liv Monteith pointed out, it's somewhat odd that Garak chose to lead Ziyal just in front of the Infirmary (notice the medical symbol above their heads) before he let himself be kissed. Was he trying to make a certain doctor jealous I wonder?

A Time to Stand

Plot:

Fashion Comments: I only have one thing to say. Lose the Starfleet insignia, and we'd have a winner. NOT an accessory I'd see Garak strutting around proudly with. But those silver linings on his shoulders do look lovely.

Fashion Comments: Color is returning! Is it the Fall Collection already? We're seeing a return of the tunic Garak wore in For the Cause, one, I might add, looks very suave and sexy. Plot:

Fashion Comments: Well, that concludes our fashion show, with a subtle return to the tunic he wore in earlier episodes. I've counted eight distinctly different outfits (which I've named - yes, I do have a life, why do you ask?)

1 - The Blue and Green Monstruosity
2 - The Saffron
3 - The Black with Silver Patterns on the Arms
4 - The Black with Silver Patterns on the Shoulders
5 - The Bourgonne with the Shoulders and Neck Covered with Colored Patterns
6 - The Red with a Dark V Pattern
7 - The Black Patternless
8 - The Cardassian Uniform.
