Sabbats and Esbats ........................ There are eight sabbats in the Wiccan year. The four major sabbats are: Candlemas, Beltane, Lammas, and Samhain. The four minor sabbats are:Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, Autumnal Equinox, and Winter Solstice. An esbat is a ceremony that is held during the full moon, which is at least thirteen times a year. An esbat is generally when a coven gets together, but is also celebrated by the solitary practitioner. Esbats are a traditional time for covens to get together, and discuss important matters or buisness............ { The Four Major Sabbats } _____________________________________________________________________________ "Candlemas".............. Candlemas is celebrated annually on February 2nd. The Candlemas ceremonies symbolize the "out with the old, and in with the new" theory. Therefore, candlemas is a good time to start new projects. This Sabbat focuses on the Goddess in her maiden aspect. _____________________________________________________________________________ "Ritual Herbs"............... Angelica,Basil, Bay, Benzoin,Celandine,Heather, Myrrh, and all yellow flowers. _____________________________________________________________________________ "Ritual Foods"............... Foods that represent growth, like seeds. These seeds could include: Pumpkin, sesame, or sunflower. Poppyseed breads and cakes, or sesame seed breads and/or cakes, and herbal teas. ______________________________________________________________________________ "Beltane"................. Beltane sabbat is also known as May Day,Rood Day, Rudemas,and Walpurgisnacht. Beltane is celebrated annually on May eve, and/or May first. _______________________________________________________________________________ "Traditional Ritual Herbs"................. The traditional ritual herbs for this sabbat include: Almond, Angelica, Ash Tree,Bluebell, Cinquefoil, Daisy, Frankincense, Hawthorn, Ivy, Marigold,Meadowsweet,Primrose, Roses,Satyrion Root, Woodruff, and Yellow Cowslips. _______________________________________________________________________________ "Altar Decorations" Altar Decorations usually include a maypole, a phallus shaped candle to symbolize fertility, a daisy chain, and springtime wildflowers. _________________________________________________________________________________ "Sabbat Incense".............. Sabbat incenses include:Frankincense, Lilac, and Rose. _________________________________________________________________________________- "Sabbat Deities"............. Beltane Deities are: Flora(Roman Flower Goddess), the lunar goddesses Diana and Artemis, Pan(the goat god of the woodlands,fields, shepherds, and fertility), Faunus, and all gods and goddesses who preside over fertility. ___________________________________________________________________________________ "Candle Colors".................... Candle colors for Beltane are Green candles, and all colors of the rainbow spectrum. __________________________________________________________________________________ "Ritual Foods"................ Ritual foods of Beltane are: All red fruits, such as strawberries,green herbal salads, red or pink wine/punch,and large round oatmeal or barley cakes.
