Runes

Runes are an alphabetic script used by the people of Northern Europe from the first century until well into the Middle Ages. In addition to their use as a written alphabet, the runes also served as a system of symbols used for magic and divination. The Roman alphabets became the preferred script of most of Europe, but the Runes forms and meaning were preserved in inscriptions and manuscripts. Today, runes are very popular as a means of divination.
Learning the Runes: The first step in learning to read the runes, is to get to know them. As with tarot cards, you should take one rune each day and meditate on it. You can do word association, visualization, physical connection with the rune, etc. You should always keep a record of your rune readings. Record which runes are face up, which ones are face down, what you think each rune meant in the context of your reading, and what your general impressions were. Even if a reading makes no sense to you when you do it, the meaning may become more clear to you later on and you'll begin to pay closer attention to your instincts.
READINGS: There are many different ways to read the runes. Since there is no reliable historical descriptions of runic divination, virtually any method you choose would be considered "the right way". You should choose what works for you. Runes can be "thrown", "cast", or "scattered", or they can be used in a tarot like pattern. Many books give an upright and inverted (positive & negative) meaning. Depending on how you choose to read your stones will determine how you will interpret them. For instance, if you "cast" the stones, some may land sideways. So if "casting" stones, I would decide which way I would interpret them. You can even devise your own spread. You need to feel comfortable with the method you choose. I would advise you though, to be consistent in your method. For instance, if you decide you will do the Consultation of Three Runes, you need to decide if you will read the stones in a "positive" manner only or will you read them as they are, "upright" or "inverted"? By being consistent in your method, you will obtain a greater understanding in your readings. The following are some types of readings you may like to try.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONSULTATION OF ODIN This method is designed to give a quick, concise answer to a specific question. It can also be used as a subject for daily meditation, or, as an overview of your day. Concentrate on a specific question. Reach in and take one tile out of the pouch and interpret it's meaning. You may receive an obvious yer or no answer or a more conditional response. If the interpretation makes no sense to you at all, rephrase the question and pick another stone, or you might try again later.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONSULTATION OF THREE RUNES Pick three runes out of the pouch, one at a time, and place them from right to left. The first rune represents your present situation. The second rune represents the attitude to be taken. The third rune represents the direct consequence derived from your attitude.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE ROMAN METHOD Lay out a white cloth. Take all the runes in your hand, concentrate on your question, and then "cast" them. Without looking at the runes, pick three at random (one at a time). Lay them out from right to left, The first rune represents those events in the past which affect the current situation. The second rune represents the present situation, which frequently refers to a choice to be made. The third rune represents the end result if the current situation remains unchanged.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE RUNIC CROSS Pick six runes from the pouch, one at a time, and place them
*Rune # 1 represents your past
*Rune # 2 represents your present situation
*Rune # 3 represents the future
*Rune # 4 reveals the heart of the problem
*Rune # 5 is the challenge
*Rune # 6 shows the positive results after the challenge is overcome
