Now that 5¼ inch floppy disks have gone out of favour, what
can be done with them? I have boxes full of them. I've found
a wonderful use for them.
First of all remove all the labels carefully. Acetone will
help remove the glue.
I had made little tree topiaries with 1½ inch Styrofoam
balls covered with various objects: beads, lentils, chick
peas, sea shells etc. Some of them I had cut the ball in half
and then ran out of steam and didn't know what to do with
them.
Now I had found the perfect use for them. They were exactly
the size of the whole in the floppies and a popsicle stick
trimmed to length made the tree trunk. I sponge painted the
popsicle stick with various browns and glued it over the spot
where the "read" opening was on the floppy.
I used dimensional fabric paint to write "Welcome". To paint
the little flowers I mixed acrylic craft paint with equal
part podge. Then I used the handle end of my paint brush to
paint little dots to make the flowers and a tooth pick to
paint the stems and leave of the flowers. I discovered that
by having two colors of the same shade ready, I could dip
my handle in both or only one at a time and make the dots.
The doubled dipped ones made interesting designs.
With a leather punch I made two holes in the top two corners
and threaded a piece of black cotton yarn through to make
the hanger.
December 97 added Richardson's Roundup disk. I made it for
the CBC Radio afternoon program by the same name.
