Tapestry Drive is a documentary/promo that I put together for one of the best live rhythm & blues
bands I have ever heard. I became associated with them for the first time in March of 1994, when
I went to one of their concerts with my brother, who was managing them at the time. I have been
hooked ever since.
The video was my first project ever as a film student, and the production values attest to my
resources in March/October of 1995, when the interviews and concert footage were shot. The
March concert, from ABG's Bar in Provo, gave me the most freedom with camera lighting &
position. I used an SVHS camera and tripod. The Mama's Cafe concert occurred in October,
and was recorded on a borrowed 8mm video camcorder. This concert was for true fans of the
band, and the audience's enthusiasm is obvious.
The only editing bay at my disposal at the time was a simple VHS model, so all the footage had to
be "dumbed down" to that format before any sequences could be spliced together. Consequently,
while the raw footage is of a relatively high quality, the master edit's resolution is quite poor. That is because, production values aside, this particular project was never meant to be a stand-alone effort. When it premiered at the 1995 BYU "Rough Cut" festival, it was supposed to be a teaser to the final project. If the faculty had approved the resources I needed to do it right, the final version was meant to be 1/2 an hour to 1 hour in length, but the resources were never cleared, and this six minute "teaser" is all that got made.
This doesn't stop the video itself from being an extremely good ride. The band is excellent, the
fans are happy, and the music was easy to build a show around. Everyone who sees the short version has their interest piqued and actually asks after the group. This prompted me to film another concert in March 1996, after they added some new members to their ranks, because I hoped to just finish it up myself. Unfortunately, fate was against me. Tapestry Drive, the Rhythm & Blues phenomenon, has been
inactive (at least on the concert circuit) since mid- 1996.
Tapestry Drive has an official website that I hope will soon be up and running and able to be referenced from
here.
