Gabriel the Lamed

Keeper of the Cold Circle

by Michael Daisey 1996

a mysterious man who lives in the Lady's Ward, this dark-skinned
ancient man looks like a piece of human wreckage. His arms are incredibly
long, perhaps to mirror his lower extremities-- all eight of them. Gabriel's
legs are sinuous, black tentacles that flow along the ground like a film
of black oil, shimmering iridescent when peak light strikes them. one of
gabriel's hands is likewise replaced, as is a length of his left arm. As he
is always cowled, it is difficult to know how far the replacements go, but
they snake up across his face like branches of ebon coral, glistening
ribboned scars forming an alien tattoo whose meaning is utterly unknown
in the Cage.
He appeared almost ten years ago, and since then has never left,
inhabiting a well kept manor from which he dispenses his trade: sage advice.
Many people work for Gabriel, but the movers and shakers of the Cage are
mystified as to where he gets his infallible knowledge.
        Some commonly known facts:
Gabriel never breaks, or even twists, his word.
Gabriel's information is always 100% accurate, or he
doesn't say anything. when he is wrong, he
gives a full refund. there is no refund for
                        questions he can't answer, however-- it's a
bit of a risk...but it's a warm day in Nessus
when he doesn't know a few facts. he will never
                        speculate, however.
Gabriel has no loyalty to anyone, and will work for
anyone who comes to him. he tells the truth
to EVERYONE, a fact that drives cutters barmy.
You cannot pay Gabriel in money or magic. he only
accepts secrets on a one-to-one ratio. you
must pay in advance, by telling your secret
Hreshas, his kython servant, who holds the
secret in trust until service is fulfilled.

Gabriel is an enigma that many investigate, but few have made
any headway at all. Perhaps the greatest commentary is that of
Shmeshka the Marauder, who will not speak of Gabriel-- at all. She
doesn't plot or trade in information on him. And that is a statement
that carries weight in the hard streets of Sigil.
