Samuel Uttley was born December 23, 1837 in Norfolk, England the son of William and Ann (Girling) Uttley. He had two brothers, Nathan and Jonathan, who came to Canada about the same time as Samuel in 1856. Sam had 9 other brothers and sisters in England.
Samuel married Mary Baxter Taylor in 1862 in Guelph. They had seven children, most born in Elmira, Waterloo County. Samuel worked as an engineer and fireman throughout Waterloo County and nearby areas.
The picture on the right is Samuel's home in Doon and was taken in the early 1890s. From left to right, daughter (standing), Mary Baxter (seated), Samuel, another daughter and James T. (seated). The house still stands in 1998.
