The end of January 2000 found much of the southeast blanketed in ice when the storm of the season hit. The day for me started out as any other slow work day at the Club with the weather being as bad as it was. Trees and powerlines were covered in melting ice throughout the area. It would have been another ordinary day at the old "Hell Hole", but a glorious act of God helped to change my activities for the day. |
As luck would have it due to the bad weather, and maybe old city infrasturcture, a transformer across the street blew out and all power to the club house was lost. Look close and you can see the explosion through the trees. I had just gone out to the car to get my camera when it happened, and I was lucky to get this shot. So now with nothing else to do "Fishman" Jamie and I decided to take a trip to Alabama in our quest to find thrifty riches. The scenery was spectacular driving up there. We stopped a few places to take some pictures of the rural decadence all the while hearing cracking branches from the melting ice. |
After rummaging through the thrifty goods of Alabama we decided to head back home. The trip back led us to one of the most amazing natural areas I have ever scene. In retrospect Little River Canyon National Preserve in the Lookout Mountains is probably just an average sight seeing area, but because of the ice the area was transformed into an icicle wonderland. |

Adding to the magnificance of the area were the Little River Falls. The emerald green mountain water looked very inviting even though the temperature was in my estimation sub-terrainian. Another fascinating element to the area were the ice-covered canyon walls. The melting icicles formed stalactites along the walls as the fridgid water rushed through the riverbed below. |

Trying to take in as much of the natural splendor as I could in what little time we had I decided the falls were the focal point of the area, so I decided to get a shot of myself enjoying them. I regret not having more time or film for that matter to better enjoy this trip. I do have to say though that this place is a keeper, and I would definitely jump at the chance for a return trip. |
