* "black page" magazine, the dutch zappa info zine is no more. the latest issue (number 82) has just been published. however, piet de doelder is collecting e-mail addresses, so chances are good that he'll keep on posting news on a regular basis. in the meantime, check out the "black page" web-site from time to time. aad hoogesteger is doing a fine job. * http://www.oocities.org/SouthBeach/Jetty/3640/index.html
* the holland festival goes zappa, but it looks like no-one thought of possible foreign visitors. after a lot of trouble I managed to get tickets for the '200 motels suite' and for the 'freak in', but so far my attempts to get tickets for the ensemble modern & for the metropool orchestra were not successful. & while I'm writing this, I just got word that both concerts are completely sold out. - I don't like these sort of things. if anyone can still get me a ticket, drop me a line.
* I saw corrie & de grote brokken a couple of nights ago (in breda). great show!! you should go & see them!! check out the dates at willem's site (mentioned a bit further on) or in a previous 'big nOte'. and also check the info on the new album(s) that corrie has scheduled. essential stuff!! don't miss it!! (see you in tilburg & hilvarenbeek)
* dutch radio show 4FM aired the first part of steve vai's show in nijmegen (from a couple of months ago). the second part is due next week, saturday may 20, 2000. unfortunately, I can't get radio 4 too well out here in belgium, so if anyone has a quality tape- or cdr-copy for trade, let me know.
* and while on the subject of radio shows: a couple of weeks ago, the dutch 'concertzender' broadcasted a concert by corrie and the brokken from 1997. very jazzy concert.
* I'm sort of mixing all the previous 'big nOtes' & all the other info that I have in one 'big nOte' info-file. it's still work in progress, but if you think you're up to it, I'll gladly send you an e-copy. I can send it as a word- or as text-document. ( = about 1 mega or about 0.5 mega straight in your mail-box). this 'big nOte' also serves as my trade-list (marked items) and I'm always looking for trades. just let me know.

OK, let's kick off with some belgian bands.

* deus: sister dew
(1999, cd5"-pro, uk, island dewcd 1)
this is a one track promo single, released to promote last years yurripean tour.
* deus: instant street
(1999, cd5"-pro, spain, island records deus-1)
a spanish promo cd for deus! wow. not that it includes something special; 'instant street (radio edit)' & 'sister dew', but it does have a nice ring to it. the back-sleeve mentions the spanish part of the 1999 tour.
* deus: freakshow
(1999,cd-bootleg,euroboot eb-29)
i have seen various deus bootlegs around, but this is the first one I actually bought. must have been the title... anyway, this boot presents parts of two concerts: 1999/06/24 paris, france and 1999/ summerfestival spain (probable the festival de benicassim that took place in august). the package and sound is fine and both concerts were pretty good.

* dead man ray: toothpaste
(2000, cd5", nl, virgin belgium - heavenhotel 20025)
the first cdsingle from "trap". it also includes 'ebola','salzer' & 'glazer', all non-album tracks. * dead man ray: brenner
(2000, cd5", nl, virgin belgium - heavenhotel 20026)
another cdsingle from "trap". it has 'virgin pusher' as second track.
* dead man ray: trap
(2000, cd, nl, virgin belgium 7243 8492242 9 - heavenhotel hh20027)
dead man ray is (among others) daan stuyven, rudy trouvé, elko blijweert, herman houbrechts & wouter van belle. this is their second album. most of the material had a soundtrack-purpose which makes it a bit more intimate. it's a nice album.

* daan: profools
(1999, cd, nl, heavenhotel hh 98017)
frontman of dead man ray and engaged in a lot of other bands & projects, but this is his first solo-project. it came out last year and is a fine addition to your dead man ray collection. (meaning: if you like dead man ray, you've got to buy this)

* zita swoon: our daily reminders
(1999, cd5", eec, warner music benelux wea 85738 05622)
I mentioned this cd5"s brother a couple of months ago already: this is the same single but in a cardboard cover and with only two tracks. * zita swoon: plage tattoo / circumstances (2000, cd, eec, warner music benelux wea 8573 82117 2) the booklet says 'plage tattoo is a music/dance/play...'. a lot of belgian bands are doing things with movies, soundtracks, etc. the disc (enhanced cd) also presents a short film. great stuff.

* frank zappa: pachuco hop
(cd-bootleg, sobf-001)
ooh, I like this one. toronto, august 1969: 'intro','bacon fat','lonely, lonely nights','intro','corrido-rock','the mothers blow','string quartet','wplj','in the sky' and 'all night long'. the recording needs some adjusting (bit of noise) but this is a great concert!

* captain beefheart: captain, my captain
(cd-bootleg, tdr-117)
1978/11, 'my father's place', ny, usa. nice package & the sound is great, but this is just another version of the same concert.

* steve vai: the guitar show with kevin bacon, show 98-52
(1998, 2cd, usa, radio show - amfm radio networks / ben manilla productions)
yes, this was great to listen to, being post-easter and all. this radio show aired december 26 & 27 in 1998. special guest steve vai was interviewed by kevin bacon. they talked about steve's merry axemas album and played various x-mas (rock) songs.
,br> * blast: puristsirup
(1991, cd, nl, vonk 02)
I talked about blast a couple of issues ago. they have a superb new album out on the cuneiform label. puristsirup is their debut album, out on vonk, (you might remember vonk as the label that also presented palinckx!) and it's almost 10 years old. I thought it was out of print, so I was happy to come across this copy. great album.

* the residents: diskomo 2000
(2000, cd, usa, east side digital esd 81512)
it's not always easy to follow, but this disc is 'diskomo / goosebump' (issued in 1980 as a 12" on ralph records) with some extra tracks. the original release had been reissued already in 1997 on bomba records, japan, as a cd5". (but without these extra tracks, of course). One of these extra tracks is 'diskomo 1992', the other two are 'diskomo 2000' and 'twinkle 2000'.

* the residents: assorted secrets
(2000, cd, usa, ralphamerica ra 008)
originally released in september 1984 as a tape, "assorted secrets" presented two projects: the first one was a live test appearance of the mole show, the second one a collection of 'studio-takes'. 2000 copies of the tape were made. the above mentioned cd is a limited re-release: 1200 numbered copies. nice artwork as well.

* john cale: dance music
(1998, cd, nl, detour 3984-22122-2)
music for nico, the ballet choreographed by ed wubbe for the scapino ballet rotterdam. the music composed by john cale and performed by ice nine. corrie van binsbergen was (the guitar) part of ice nine. this album was brought to my attention by willem schwertmann - visit his site for some great info on corrie van binsbergen: http://www.sofa.demon.nl
john cale is expected in antwerp one of the next days where he will receive a doctor's degree. belgian radio (cucamonga - vrt 1) is paying a lot of attention to this.

* gene carl band: below paradise
this is another scapino / ballet product. music by gene carl,
choreography by irzik galili. corrie van binsbergen plays the guitar in the gene carl band. now where did I put that corrie & de grote brokken t-shirt I brought home from breda??

* the titanics: s/t
(??, cd, usa, taang! records t41)
recorded in 1989, but I don't really know when this cd got released. it contains 'out of the frying pan' (van vliet). garage band. sounds OK.

* captain beefheart: revenant
(1999, cd-pro, usa, revenant records)
hard to find promo cd for the grow fins box set. nice package though.

* the pilafian project: meltdown
(1998, cd, usa, summit records dcd 227)
the cd is subtitled 'a new dimension in jazz', but I can't really say that I'm convinced. however, the pilafian project is a trio: sax, tuba and drums and they play contemporary pieces: bartok & ravel but also monk & ornette coleman. my reason for buying this album was their covervesion of beefheart's 'dali's car' (van vliet). the cd also includes a second, extended version of the track.

* trio magneto: s/t
(1999, cd, it, stereosupremo sts 0004)
italian band trio magneto play 'toads of the short forest' (frank zappa) on their latest album. the trio consists of guitar, bass & drums. I like what they did with 'toads of the short forest'. it's not the easiest piece to cover, especially with a trio.

* v.a.: tribute to van halen
(2000, cd, ec, triage records eagcd113)
I'm not sure, but I think this is the yurripean edition of the van halen album that got issued in the states last year. but with a different title. now I hear you ask: so why do we have to listen to this? well: dweezil zappa on 'unchained'; vinnie colaiuta on 'light up the sky'; aynsley dunbar on 'pretty woman'.

short & extra: guitar techniques (british mag + cd) has vai's 'for the love of god' as a 'rock-lesson'. the track is played by dave kilminster.

phew - , that's all for now. talk again to you soon, peter van laarhoven, belgium
