Kennebec River Range Light
There were several lighthouses
built in 1898 to help mariners
navigate along the Kennebec River
toward the ship building center of Bath.
Originally known as
the Doubling Point Range Lights
and established on Arrowsic Island in 1908,
the two wooden towers are
the only range lights in Maine.
The way the lights are
aligned indicates to ships
the middle of the channel on the approach to
Fiddler Reach, which is a very sharp double
bend of the river beyond Doubling Point.
The front light is 21 feet
high and the rear light is
13 feet high and are 235
feet apart from each other.
Each one held a fifth order Fresnel lens,
which were removed in 1979.
The keepers house and towers are
connected by a wooden walkway.
The boathouse added in 1901
and the oil house in 1902.
