Seguin Island Light

Seguin Island Light

Seguin Island Light is the second lighthouse
built in Maine by orders from
President George Washington in 1795.
At the mouth of the Kennebec River
it is the highest above
water on the Maine coast.
The tower is not the tallest on the coast
of Maine, but the light is the highest
due to the location on the island.
186 feet above sea level, and is visible
from 40 miles on a clear day.
The original wooden tower was
replaced by a stone structure in 1819
and rebuilt in 1857.
Seguin has one of the most powerful
foghorns ever made because this area is
often shrouded in heavy fog.

"A Ghost Story"

A 19th century keeper's wife would
play the same tune on the piano
over and over again, driving the keeper
insane.
He took an ax to the piano
and then killed his wife and
then killed himself.
The Legend goes that the tune
can still be heard drifting from
the island on calm evenings.
