Bluejays, that scold...Chickadees, without fear,
Raccoons, fox, wolf, porcupine and deer,
Chipmunks and squirrels, dash from branch to branch,
Hawks overhead....hoping for a chance,
To snatch a small mouse....an unfortunate creature,
Seems to be quite a daily feature!
Rabbit tracks, in the fresh, white snow,
Lead to my door, because they all know,
I will be faithful and food will be there,
To help them survive, in a world that's unfair!
BUT! Who is this? Someone NEW!
Oh, my!!! Can it really be true?
Another visitor, looking for a quick snack,
With white streaks, down dark, furry back!
I tiptoe quietly.....so as not to scare,
I'm no match for him!! This is not fair!
If he in fear, should retaliate,
I would experience something new....too late!
I still have memories of another,
And warnings, from my older brother,
When our dog kept barking and I could not sleep,
Under our steps was a cat, from the street!
I grabbed a broom and marched out there,
To chase the cat, from under the stair,
To silence a barking dog and then,
Go back to my cozy bed again!
I poked my weapon, at the intruder, so...
I could force him, to quickly GO!
And, at that dark moment, when I could barely see,
My brother suddenly screamed at me!
"Get in the house! Stop doing that!!"
"The one, under the steps, isn't a cat!"
It's true.....cats don't look like that,
I'd just given a scared skunk, a stinging whack!
He was so surprised....and so was I,
I dashed inside.....AND YOU ALL KNOW WHY!
