The first book I would like to recommend is a very special one called Simple Abundance written by Sarah Ban Breathnacht. It has been featured by Ophrah Winfrey on her TV show, and I feel it has changed my life! I started with the Simple Abundance plan in January, 1997. There is a page to read for each day of the year and the book is filled with ways to improve your life, your outlook and your thinking. When you start reading this book, you are required to keep a Gratitude Journal. Each day you write 5 things you are grateful for in this journal, and it is amazing how this simple act can immediately cause a small change in your everyday life. Instead of focusing on the negative as many of us do, this journal causes you to focus on the postive elements of the day. It has brought about a wonderful change in the way I view the world and I think it could have the same effect on you
Into Thin Air tells the tragic story of the May 1996 Mt. Everest ascent of several teams of climbers, which ended in the death of 8 people. This is a fast, exciting read even for someone like me, who had never even thought about what it must take to attempt a feat such as this. I read this because of meeting Peter who had climbed to Base Camp and had to be rescued. You feel the physical and mental torture climbers face as they brave the elements at 29,028 feet. You come away with a mixed bag of feelings--admiration for the courage of anyone who attempts such an impossible task--AND utter distain that these people could risk everything just to prove that they could do the impossible.
While this Orson Scott Card book is billed as fantasy or science-fiction, I would describe it as a spiritual book. It tells the story of a Mormon family with three young children who have recently located to a new state. It may have had the most profound emotional effect on me that I have ever experienced while reading a book. The characters are so well written that you feel like you know each of them, and the details of the Mormon religion are fascinating. While detailing the day-to-day mundane details of these people's lives, you find yourself holding your breath as they face the everyday hurdles we all face at home, school and the office. You won't soon forget this family or the ending of this book. (Available in paperback)
