When I was a bachelor, I liv'd all alone, I worked at the weaver's trade
And the only, only thing that I did that was wrong, Was to woo a fair young maid.
I wooed her in the wintertime, Part of the summer, too
And the only, only thing that I did that was wrong, Was to keep her from the foggy, foggy dew.
One night she knelt close by my side, When I was fast asleep.
She threw her arms around my neck, And she began to weep.
She wept, she cried, she tore her hair, Ah, me! What could I do?
So all night long I held her in my arms, Just to keep her from the foggy, foggy dew.
Again I am a bachelor, I live with my son, We work at the weaver's trade.
And every single time I look into his eyes, He reminds me of that fair young maid.
He reminds me of the wintertime, Part of the summer, too,
And the many, many times that I held her in my arms
Just to keep her from the foggy, foggy, dew.
Well, I guess I have to explain my choice of songs for this page. I was searching through Taylor's Traditional Tunebook (a highly recommended MIDI site, by the way) for an appropriate English or Welsh tune. The Welsh tunes seemed too slow and sad for my tastes, but much to my delight, I found "Foggy, Foggy Dew" which seemed a great choice. On our cruise, Peter (shown above) serenaded us with this song one evening, with John (see below) joining him in the chorus! So since Peter is English and John is Welsh, it seemed the perfect tune to pick! And it brings back a lovely memory as well.
Our travels left us in Edinburgh, and now we must make our way (via a 1-hour train ride back to Glasgow and then a flight) to Cardiff in South Wales. (If I have any repeat visitors, you may notice a change in plans. That is because our Brendan tour was cancelled approximately 6 weeks before we were to leave!!) We were very upset at first but were able to put together an alternative plan that probably will work out better than the original one.
Day One- Since our flight does not arrive until 5:40 p.m., we'll probably have dinner and spend a quiet evening. We will be spending the next 4 nights at the Angel Hotel in Cardiff, which is right across the street from Cardiff Castle, a great location.
Day Two- Cardiff is the capital of Wales and home to John and Rosemarie. Our dear friends immediately came to the rescue when they heard about our cancelled trip and have arranged to take off two days from work and act as our personal guides for today and tomorrow. I know that we will get so much more out of our experience because of seeing Cardiff through their eyes. Among the sights we hope to see: Cardiff Castle, the Welsh Folk Museum at St. Fagans (one of Europe's leading open-air museums, showing visitors how the people in Wales lived during the past 400 years!), Museum of Welsh Life, and possibly Castell Coch and Caerphilly Castle.
Day Three- Our second day with John and Rosemarie. The change in plans actually worked out for the best because it gives us a chance to spend more time with our friends. Our bus tour's hectic schedule only allowed us to meet them for dinner one evening.
Day Four- Today we'll explore Cardiff on our own and maybe do some last minute souvenir shopping. We may also do a sightseeing day tour or rent a car and drive to Bath and Stonehenge.
Day Five- Today we leave Cardiff and get on the train to London where we will spend the next 3 nights in the Britannia Hotel, where we spent our honeymoon 26 years ago!! I am so excited to be staying there once again.
Day Six- Today we'll see the typical tourist attactions once again, the changing of the guard, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, etc. Plus I'd like to see Kensington Palace and the impressive Lloyd's of London building.
Day Seven- More sightseeing in London plus a trip to one of my favorite stores, Harrods. Back to our London hotel for dinner and to prepare for our flight back to the U.S. tomorrow.
Here's a photo of John and Rosemarie, who we affectionately call our Welsh cousins. We met these two lovely people just one year ago on our tour of the Canadian Rockies and the cruise to Alaska. We got to know each other during our wonderful dinners on the ship, and have continued our friendship through letters ever since. We had such a wonderful time aboard the Dawn Princess, that the four of us have booked another Princess cruise to the Panama Canal together in Spring 1999! Read about our plans in Panama Canal Cruise, my newest page.
