Overview

These pages contain tips on how to use FrontPage 97 with a GeoCities home site. FrontPage is a good HTML page editor and can be used to create pages at GeoCities. There are some restrictions on using FrontPage at GeoCities, which I have summarized in the Rules Section below.

Beginners Help

The basic process is that you create your page(s) on your hard drive, and then upload the page and image files to GeoCities. If you just have the FrontPage Editior, create a directory on your hard drive and keep all your page files and image files in that directory. If you have FrontPage Express (eg. MSIE 4.0), it is similar to the FrontPage 97 editor, see my FrontPage Express Help. If you have the full version of FrontPage 97, I have the instructions for creating a local file web in my FrontPage Startup Page.

Rules on using FrontPage 97 at GeoCities

1.   In order to use FrontPage 97 to edit your GeoCities home site, you will have to create a mirror site on your local hard drive. After you make changes to the pages, you will have to FTP the pages, images, and any other files up to your GeoCities home site. Before you get too involved creating your pages locally on your hard drive, you should create a simple 'index.html' file and upload it to GeoCities. This way you will know whether or not your internet connection will support this.

Here are some of the options for uploading to GeoCities, choose which ever works best for you with you Internet Connection:

GeoCities EZ-Upload   This is inside the GeoCities File Manager utility.

FTP   You can use a standard FTP program like WS_FTP to upload files to GeoCities. The AnswerPoint has a section on how to use WS FTP at GeoCities, and GeoCities has a page explaining ftp at the FTP Proceedures Page.

AOL Keyword FTP   I don't use AOL, but I have seen this in the Help Forums

MS Web Publishing Wizard 1.5   The most recent version of the Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard can be used to FTP files to GeoCities. For a good tutorial on using the MS Web Publishing Wizard at GeoCities visit The AnswerPoint.

For Upload Problems   There is an FTP and file upload help forum.

2.   Your GeoCities home site is Read Only, files can not be written or updated directly. The only way to manipulate your files is by either using GeoCities utilities, or indirectly by FTPing files to GeoCities.

3.   FrontPage puts pictures in an IMAGES subdirectory. Make sure you upload this directory with your pages.

4.   Use relative URLs to your images, page links etc, that are located on your home site. A relative URL is just the file name and extension (example: hello.htm), remove any directory information, if frontpage inserts it. Of course, any links to other sites should contain the full URL (example: http://www.oocities.org/SouthBeach/Sands/1492/ if you want to link to my home page).

5.   FrontPage at GeoCities works best if you create your own pages from scratch (normal page). Most of the templates involve FrontPage Extensions, which as of this writing, GeoCities does not have, so don't bother using WebBot components that require them (unless GeoCities gets the Server Extensions). You can use WebBot components that work directly out of the FrontPage Editor, updating the HTML right away (example: the table of contents, last change date).

6.   Case Sensativity. GeoCities is case sensative, this meens that Capitalization makes a difference. The easiest way to avoid problems is to use lower case (do not capitalize) for file names, your GeoCities user id, and your GeoCities password.
