If Table of Contents page won't generate

If you renamed your index.htm file to index.html for GeoCities, the Table of Contents webbot isn't smart enough to know that. To fix the problem:

  1. Open your Table Of Contents Page in the FrontPage editor.
  2. Click your right mouse button on the Table Of Contents Webbot
  3. Select Webbot Component Properties on the pop-up menu
  4. Change the Page URL for Starting Point of Table to index.html (add an 'l')

If Image Maps won't work at GeoCities

By default, FrontPage 97 sets Image Maps to use FrontPage server extensions. Use client side image maps instead, they work with most browsers now. To switch FrontPage 97 to Client Side Image Maps:

  1. Open the FrontPage Explorer for your web site but not the Editor (close the Editor if it is open).
  2. On the Tools menu, select Web Settings.
  3. Tab to the Advanced page
  4. Under Image Maps, set the Style drop down to <None>, and check the Generate Client Side Image maps check box.
  5. Press OK, and Recalculate the Web, if a message box pops up asking you if you want to convert an image map, answer yes.

Note: GeoCities does support NCSA image maps, but why bother. Also, you should put text links near your image map for browsers that do not support image maps.

Non-Breaking Space and Line Break

If a line is splitting between two words, and you don't want it too, you can insert a Non-Breaking Space (&nbsp;), the keyboard short cut is Ctrl-Shift+Space (while holding down the Ctrl key and Shift key together, press the Space Bar).

To start or force a new line, without the blank line that you normally get between paragraphs, you can insert a Line Break (<br>), the keyboard short cut is Shift+Enter (while holding down the Shift key, press the Enter key).

Prevent FrontPage from Parsing HTML

Occasionally you may have the need to put some HTML on your page that you don't want FrontPage to process or alter. In the FrontPage Editor, if you go to the Insert Menu, and select the HTML Markup sub-menu item. A dialog box appears, where you can enter HTML that won't be parsed by FrontPage.
