Dave And I - Together At Last

You're Number To Stick Around
Since August 20th, 1998

July 9th, 1998 was a big day for me. After being a huge Dave Grohl/Foo Fighters fan for countless years, I was finally able to attend their first-ever appearance in my city. The Foos were touring with Edgefest, the all-Canadian music festival originally started a Toronto radio station in the early '90s. Dave & co. were set to perform at 7:30pm, the third-last act on the main stage. Time could not go fast enough. I was there for one band, and one band only. Finally, the time came. And so goes my Foo Experience:

The band came onstage slowly, without much fanfare. There were actually several false alarms, as the crowd mistook roadies and guitar techs for the band, and went nuts. Finally the Foos emerged from the left, just sort of casually walking out. Everyone screamed their heads off. Dave was wearing a yellow shirt - I think it had the Cheerios logo on the front, I couldn't quite tell. The exact order of the playlist eludes me, but it goes something like this, I think:

-> Monkeywrench - This was the opening song.
-> Hey, Johnny Park! - Pretty sure this one was second...
-> Alone + Easy Target
-> I'll Stick Around
-> Bottle Rocket - This was a little improvisation of Dave's, with Taylor adding some rhythm. It was about kids setting off bottle rockets at a concert, and only lasted about a minute.
-> Big Me - "This song is called 'Big Me,' goddammit!" 'Goddammit' then became the word of the day... Dave threw it into every sentence.
-> Wind Up
-> Weenie Beenie - Dave proclaimed this to be his Pantera song, ("Pantera rocks, goddammit!") and recommended we all go out and buy Pantera's third concert video.
-> Good Grief
-> Everlong
-> Wattershed - I know this one was near the end somewhere.
-> This Is A Call - This was the final song of the set, and Dave dedicated it to Green Day ("Goddammit!"). I have no idea why. I think Green Day later dedicated 'Basketcase' to the Foos.

All in all, it was an awesome show. I was totally satisfied in every way... except they didn't play 'Baker Street,' which had just been released here. Other than that, it was a perfect set. My foray into the moshpit was brief, unfortunately... I was in the second row or so, going hard, when I kind of got my ass kicked by a guy in steel-toed boots. I'm sure he didn't mean to land on me, but... Half-unconscious, I retreated back to the edge of the pit for the rest of the concert. (To the guy who helped me out, thanks!) I took a bunch of pictures, most of which actually turned out all right, though the band is kinda far away. (After the set was over, I went to the med center and was treated for a minor concussion.)

So I bet you think that's the whole story, huh? Girl goes to concert, takes some pictures, saves the ticket stub. Oh no. There's a good portion of the Experience to be told yet. My devious plan to meet the band worked, (and no, I'm not sharing it with anyone. It will forever remain my brainchild and my secret.) and in no time at all, my husband and I found ourselves talking to Dave, Nate, and Taylor. (Franz was nowhere to be seen.) The entire conversation was pretty much about music, specifically, the band's opinion of the various Canadian acts (such as Bif Naked, Moist, the Tea Party and Econoline Crush, to name a few) on tour with Edgefest. Dave said he was honestly impressed with the Canadian music scene. I was ecstatic. I've long been a promoter of my country's music to my friends back in the States. Anyways, before we left, I gave Dave a kiss. I just had to do it. It was a good one, too. Dave told my husband he was "lucky to have such a cool wife." I swear, those were his exact words. I could have died, I was so happy! Even if he doesn't remember me, I'll always remember that. And so ends my Foo Experience.
