Annular Eclipse of
22nd August 1998

A whole group of divers
specially took the trouble to witness an unforgettable event.(see photos of the eclipse).
This event is none
other than the last solar eclipse to ever touch
Asean shores before the millenium is up.
The annular eclipse took place on 22nd August
1998 at around 8 a.m. Singapore time.
"Annular"
means ring-shaped and an eclipse happens when a
celestial body is blocked by another celestial
body thus creating a rare and unforgettable
experience for all. In an annular eclipse, the
sun would look like a ring as the moon came into
alignment with it.
|
Pulau Pemanggil was one of
the Malaysian islands which would be directly
along the path of the eclipse, thus offering the
participants an opportunity to go for a dive trip
and see the eclipse.I am now proud to present you with my photos of this remarkable event! They are remarkable
in that all I used was a pair of sunglasses, a
pair of "eclipse shades" and a simple
automatic camera (and it wasn't even an SLR
camera!), plus a few trick techniques experience
has taught me.
Right now I want
to thank Pua Lip Peng of DSO National
Laboratories for lending me the use of the Nikon
Coolscan to transfer the images directly from the
film, without which the images you now see would
never have been so good! (Damned photo studios
don't ever seem to be able to get the right
print).
