tdiasialogo.gif (8142 bytes)Technical Diving International (TDI) - Asia launched a successful recovery of artifacts and other items from the wreck site of the Empress of Asia.  The search was at the resting of the Empress south-west of Singapore, at Sultan Shoal.

The items are of historical significance as they are part of Singapore's history, in particular, the prelude to the fall of Singapore to the Japanese invasion forces.

one1_0723.jpg (16113 bytes)The project made news in the Straits Times on 23rd July 1998 when they raised the anchors of the Empress.  Click here to read the article.

They again made news in the Straits Times on 18th August 1998 when the recovered artifects were placed on display at the Singapore History Museum.  Click here to read the article.

Since then, they have made news again on other projects and expeditions.

Congratulations to TDI Asia !!!

On Febuary 5th 1942, the 16,909 GRT, 592 feet long converted troop carrier, Empress Of Asia carrying 2651 people was attacked off Singapore by Japanese aircraft. The ship caught fire and sank nine miles off the coast.

This project is to document the history and event that took place during the war and to produce a film. Divers will sketch and photographs finds, which will go to the Singapore Heritage Authorities for a museum display.
