Sonic Chaos (called Sonic and Tails in Japan) debuted for the SEGA GAME GEAR in November of 1993. It was also released for the Master System.
Could this be the end of South Island? That evil maniac Dr. Robotnik has another twisted idea to take over the world! This time he wants to steal the mystical Chaos Emeralds. The emeralds are the source of vitality for all living things. But in the hands of rotten Dr. Robotnik, they could be turned into nuclear bombs and laser weapons!
The evil doctor has already snatched the Red Chaos Emerald, causing the other emeralds to lose balance and fly into a parallel universe. Now South Island is sinking into the ocean. Sonic and "Tails" will have to use all their super speed and super stunts to stop Dr. Robotnik and restore harmony to the universe!
"OK, Dr. Robotnik," says Sonic, "You're charged with contempt of hedgehog. There's no time to lose. Gotta slide, Clyde!"

This is the easiest level in the game and very straight forward. It is filled with twisting loops and the ever-popular corkscrew! Be on the look out for spikes all over the place and watch for hidden goodies galore! The boss is bigger version of the bouncer-ladybug badniks you meet throughout the level. Just jump over him and spin dash him 8 times to finish him off.
This technological stage is similar to the Starlight Zone in Sonic 1. This level does add some brand new twists, like the slanted metal surfaces that you need to race across at full speed of you will tumble off onto spikes below! The boss for this level is a giant blue Caterkiller that stands straight up. It will fire its body segments at you in a pattern. The first part will bounce the first part at you, so just run under it. Next it will fire its second segment straight at you so jump over it. Lastly it will bounce its third segment at you so jump over that one too. Now nail it in the head before it has time to pull itself together. Six hits and your on to the next level.
Filled with breakable walls, floors, and ceilings, Sleeping Egg Zone can drive you nuts trying to figure out where to go. Be on the lookout for platforms that do not have grass on them, as you will fall right through them! This level introduces you to the brand new item, the pogo stick. Used by Sonic, it can be very helpful to getting to places you can't normally go. Get use to it now, as you will need it later on. The boss in this zone is a bouncing bot that has a striking resemblance to Robotnik. He will bounce one way across the screen and fire four shots at you when he's at the top of his jump. The easiest way to beat him is to let him bounce half way across the screen, while avoiding his shots. Then when he jumps again, spin dash under him and hit him in the back. Repeat this as he will turn around after reaching one side of the screen. Eight hits later you'll be in the next zone.
Robotnik has actually roboticised an entire level!! This entire metal level is the hardest level in the game. If you're not careful this level will have you yelling "CHEAP!" at the top of your lungs! Be very careful of the slanted surfaces, which are back, as you can die very easily if not going full speed. Also be on the lookout for secret entrances which are all over the place, but beware, some may be traps! The boss to this level can be tricky, but isn't actually all that hard. He is a tree climbing egg-bot, which fires three shots at you from the bottom, middle, and top of the screen. The easiest way to kill him is when he comes down to the bottom of the screen, quickly jump high and on top of him and try to continue bouncing. If you do it right he'll be gone in no time. Eight hits and he's done for.
This is the classic water level that we all can't live without, right? Actually, there isn't a whole lot of water, and if you keep to the high roads it's easy to keep your feet dry. If you do get caught underwater, do take to long as you have to get back to the surface to breath. Their is one small, greenish type door, that is the biggest problem in this level. Some curious hedgehogs have been known to push against it, which causes it to open, but it starts a current that pulls you away! So the best bet is to go high in this level and steer clear of the danger. The boss in the level acts quite similar to the bouncing bot boss in Sleeping Egg Zone, but is actually much harder. To beat him, stay all the way to the right of the screen as he can't actually squash you there. When he gets close, quickly nail him eight times (if you're good you can keep bouncing on top of him much like you did for the boss from Mecha Green Hill Zone). Beware, he's not out yet! He will fly into the air and break into 2 parts, his bottom half, and his top half. His bottom half will fire six missles at you. The first three come from the left side of the screen and will land on the left, then middle, the right of the screen. The last three come from the right and land on the right, then middle, then left of the screen. The top part of the boss will now come into striking distance so give it the last shot which will finish him off for good!
Enter the final level of the game! This entire level is set up like a gigantic computer chip board. There are no actual badniks to worry about, just nasty pitfalls, those damn slanted surfaces, plenty of lasers, and mine carts that send you flying down hills! The worst part of this level is the maze of warp-tubes you must navigate through to beat it. Take your time and remember where you have been! Robotnik himself attacks you in the games finale, and he is by far the toughest boss. He will attack in a walking version of his egg-o-matic that is armed to the teeth with lasers. Be sure you have plenty of rings before you get to him as you will need them! Robotnik will walk at you and fire three types of lasers at you. A spread of shots, a giant power shot, and reflective shots. The reflective shots are very hard to avoid and you normally do get hit. Don't panic, just be sure to get a ring back. Run at him and jump on top of him, and try to continue bouncing on him for as long as you can. You need to hit him twenty four times... Yes, you heard me right TWENTY FOUR!!! After hitting him twenty four times, unfortunately, he's not done yet. He will lose the legs to his egg-o-matic, and the bottom will grow bigger. He will then begin flying around the room! Watch for him to swoop on you from either the left or right side. One hit will destroy this last form, and send Robotnik packing! Now sit back and watch the endings! Good job!
All of the emeralds in Sonic Chaos are found in Special Stages where you are timed for a race to an emerald. Usually, inside every zone is a race to get the next emerald.
Special Stage 1: Break the Sonic monitor and fly right. At first, stay on the line where the small rings appear, because you can clear two lines of the large rings with one pass, and these are usually the lines with the highest ring density (there's more rings on these lines).
Special Stage 2: Go to the right, jump on the rightmost platform. Board the spring, and look for the side which has the highest platform to the side of it. If you move to the extreme right and left with your spring, you will see platforms above you to the right and/or left. When Sonic is at the highest point of the spring jump, jump up and to the side you're on and you'll end up on the next platform. Keep repeating this, until you're on the platform with the emerald. If you need time, there is at least one clock monitor which halts the time left clock for a few seconds near the top of this stage.
Special Stage 3: Go into the tube to your right by breaking the invincibility monitor. If you press up for the rest of the stage, you'll go into the room with the emerald. Explanation: you go through the same thing several times, with the crisscross tubes, and then after several of these, you'll notice the pattern changes. If you look to your right before the tube goes upward, you'll see the emerald for a split second. The tube then curves to the left, and you'll come up on an intersection where you can continue to the left or go up. You want to go up.
Special Stage 4: This one doesn't leave much time to spare. The emerald is on a high platform which you can't jump onto at the rightmost point on the stage. One way to do it is to run and jump as fast as you can to the right. Jump as far as you can, avoiding the recesses , ending up on a point about as high as you are. Try running or using the combination down+1 to get some speed, and then jump at the end of the platform. At one point you'll reach a downward sloping towards the right platform, followed by a high sheer platform. You have two options. Either you can do a down+1 then jump to get on the platform, and use the rocket shoes monitor there to fly right, or you can break through this hill. When you can't break any more walls, jump and you'll break the one below you, then break the walls to your right again, repeat. At this point you can run right and pick up a clock monitor to stop time. You'll want to either continue right and then back up and pick up some rocket shoes, or backtrack and pick up an earlier pair. From here, rocket shoes are pretty much required to save time. You will go from shoes to running & jumping for short periods of time several times. Usually you have to back up and get a pair. If you end up running on a row of tiles at the bottom of the screen which crumble from under your feet, you've gone too far, and need to back up for the final set of shoes. These are the only way I know of to reach the platform with the emerald on it. This is one big-ass level, sorry I can't give a more detailed explanation. Some tips: if you reach an area where there's a diagonal line of the stationary plunger things to you're right, you want to scale this hill, by jumping just to the left the plunger on the level you want to land on. If you reach an area where there's one plunger on the lower left, one on the lower right, and one on the upper right, I THINK you want to backtrack.
Special Stage 5: Last one, and it's a nastier version of the third. You can pick up a bunch of time monitors on this level by diverting from the default path (straight) at intersections. This one isn't as bad as Stage 4. Sorry, no direct set of moves here. Suggestion: pause the game every so often to look at the area around you when you're in the tubes. Take the side paths. The 5th emerald is in a room which is hard to locate, because it's so small. The room is on the left side of the level, and is approachable from the inside of the level. Look for an intersection where one of you're options is a tube that leads into a room with a plunger which is ready to shoot you back where you came from. If you look, you'll see that there's a clear path just above the plunger thing. Jump and use the D button to avoid being thrown back out, and take the path above it. The emerald is down this path.
The Endings: If you do not get all of the emeralds, you get to see Sonic fall on his face! Looks like you have more work to do... If you did manage to get all the emeralds, you get to see Sonic chasing Robotnik for some rings. Robotnik drops the rings. Sonic picks up the rings and next thing you see, Sonic is inside the Chaos Emerald running around. Then the credits roll. Tails always gets a good ending.
