Sonic debuted in the original game Sonic the Hedgehog for the SEGA Genesis system and Sega Master System in June of 1991. Both games were identical.

The Story

In this game begins the struggle between Dr. Julian Ivo Robotnik and our hero, Sonic the Hedgehog. Dr. Robotnik the mad scientist, is snatching innocent animals and turning them into evil robots! Only one tough dude can put an end to the demented scientist's fiendish scheme. It's Sonic, the real cool hedgehog with the spiked haircut and power sneakers that give him super speed.

Sonic the Hedgehog #0

Summary

This comic was the very first Sonic comic which introduces all the main characters as well as the foundation for the comic series. While attempting to escape Dr. Robotnik and his new invention - The Mega Muck, Sonic encounters Caterkiller one of the badniks from Sonic 1. After solving that problem, we are given our very first glimpse of the underground Knothole Base and The Freedom Fighters within by Sonic. What Sonic and the rest of the Freedom Fighters don't know is that Robotnik isn't through as a leak is soon discovered - in the form of Mobian Weeping Willows. While Sonic and the Freedom Fighters investigate, Robotnik and his badnik Crabmeat attack (another badnik from Sonic 1)!

My Thoughts

This was a great game to start off the Sonic Legacy. It had a nice story line with some challenging levels (The Labyrinth boss was exceptionally hard) and had two different endings, one with and one without all of the chaos emeralds. The only part of this game which confused me was in the book in showed a picture of a "sonic ring" (a ring with Sonic’s head inside) that if found in the bonus level would give you an extra life. I only ever found this by using the debug code (see my code section) and going through the walls, but even then you can’t get them, you passed right through them. Do any of you know anything about this? If so just leave it in My Guestbook!

Levels in This Game:

(click on the names of the levels to see a picture from each)

Green Hill Zone

Being the first level, this is the easiest in the game. Watch for walls that can be rolled-through. You must watch out for endless Spikes, rotating-spiked logs, and six different Badniks, Buzz Bombers, Choppers, Moto Bugs, Red Newtrons (that fly at you), Yellow Newtrons (that shoot at you), and Crabmeats. Robotnik is fairly easy (espescally if you get the invincible right before him in the tall tree), as he attacks with a giant ball on a chain, which he swings at you. Jump on one of the two plateforms and nail him eight times to finsh him off. Then run to the prison egg and release the rabbits and flickies (birds).

Marble Zone

This level is much harder then the last with lava everywhere. Watch out for spikes that pop out of the ground everywhere. Giant wieghts and "chandeliers" that have spikes on them drop down from the roof. And lakes of lava must be passes by riding a single block across. Watch out for flying fire balls out of the wall. Badniks in this level: Buzzbombers, Caterkiller, and Bat Bots. Robotnik really easy in this level. When he comes over top of you nail him twice and jump to the other platform, and repeat the pattern. Then destroy the prison egg to free the trapped squirrles and seals.

Spring Yard Zone
Originally named Sparkling Zone

This level starts the long Sonic tradition of a pinball machine. Heres what I'm talking about: Sping Yard Zone (Sonic 1), Casino Night Zone (Sonic 2), Carnival Night Zone (Sonic 3), Slot Machine Stage bonus round (Sonic & Knuckles), and of course all of Sonic Spinball. As in every one of these levels, this Zone can be quite nerve racking. Sometimes you get stuck for what it seems to be an hour in the bouncers. And you also have to look out for some new and old Badniks. Buzz Bombers (again), Crabmeats, Rollers, and these wired purple things with wheels and spikes on their backs that you must roll to kill. Watch out for the Rollers to come up behind you as you run down the tunnels with the big spike balls. This boss is the hardest yet. He will attack with a spike in the bottom of his Egg-O-Matic, and when he hits the ground, he will remove one block, so kill him fast before you run out of ground to stand on! After defeating him, be sure not to fall down the newly formed holes, and help those pigs and chickens out from the prison egg!

Labyrinth Zone

This game starts off another Sonic tradition of underwater levels. As in every underwater level in Sonic, you must keep getting air from either the surface, or the little groups of bubbles (that seem to pop up in every game) that somehow produce large bubbles that you can inhale. But I was pleased with the fact that Sonic must keep breathing, compared to the Mario, who can hold his breath for conveniently as long as needed! This level is probably the hardest in the game just because of the fact that you must keep finding air. Watch out for spears that pop out of the walls, spiked balls on chains that swing, wierd animal heads that shoot fire balls, and of course the Badniks. Jaws, Burrobot, and Red Orbinauts (that shoot thier spiked-balls at you) are your only Badniks in this level. Watch for the Burrobots to pop out of the ground (watch for their nose-drills sticking out of the ground). This boss is just Robotnik leading you through a long trail of traps, which can get quite hard. After you get through them, Robotnik will just run away, but eight hits will kill him if you are good enough and fast enough to catch him. I have killed him a few times. Then rush to the prison egg to release those poor pengins, and seals.

Star Light Zone

This is one of the funnest levels in Sonic history. It also has the return of walls that can be rolled through (like the very first one). I love to play this level! Their are only two Badniks in this level, Bombs (watch out for the fireballs they shoot after they explode), and Green Orbinauts (that don't shoot their spiked-balls at you). The Green Orbinauts can only be killed if yor invincible, or still flashing from being hit. Also, teeter-tottor like springs with spkie balls on one end send you flying when you jump on the other end. Robotnik is easy in this level and you can hit him in two ways. Jump on the teeter-totter springs just after he drops a spike ball to send it flying back at him, or use the springs like normal to send yourself fly ing into the air and nail Robotnik. Watch out for these spike balls, they explode unlike the normal ones. Eight hits (he can be hit nine though if one spike ball is left!) and Robotnik is finished. Free the prisoned Flickies (blue birds) and pigs.

Scrap Brain Zone
Originally named Clock Works Zone

This last level can be tricky, but is no sweat after you get the hang of it. Act 1 and 2 are full of tredmills, giant saws, fire that comes out of broken pipes, giant pistans that will crush you, giant spike balls on chains that swing, fountain looking things that shoot electricity, and floors that give away under you. Watch out for the Badniks in this level. Caterkillers, Ball Hogs, and Bombs, which release rabbits and chickens. Just when you think your done at the end of Act 2, Robotnik foils you again and sends you falling to a completely different Act 3. This level is under water, so keep finding air. To beat this level quickly, at the very start, when the platform starts moving, run in front of it and drop down, then keep going right with out falling down. You can beat this Act going the short way without even taking a breath from the bubbles. This Act is full of spears that come out of the walls, spiked balls on chains, and those animal heads that shoot fire balls at you. Badniks in this level are Jaws, Red Orbinauts, and Burrobots, which release pengins and seals. The last red spring will take you to the Final Zone.

Final Zone

This is the final fight with Robotnik (in this game anyway, their are many more battles to come in future games). When you get to the final room, stay in the left or right corners and attack Robotnik when the pistons comes down (you may not be able to hit him every time). After the pistons go back up, the red lights at the sides will produce four white fire balls. Stay at one side, and just before they fire, run to the other to make them easier to dodge. Repeat this pattern until you hit him eight times to finsh Robotnik off. Robotnik will try to escape in his Egg-O-Matic, but are we going to let him get away that easily?? I don't think so! Nail him once more to send him crashing to the floor below! Sit back and enjoy one of the two endings (one good and one bad, depending on if you got all of the emeralds).

The Secret Zone (3D Special Stage)

This 3D maze is the only way to collect the Chaos Emeralds. You can enter this maze by finishing the Acts with 50 rings or more and jumping into the giant rings behind the goal signs. Jump through the maze until you find the emerald, surrounded by diffent coloured gems. Jump into the gems to destroy them and carve away a path to the emeralds. There are only two ways out of this zone, by finding the emerald, or touching the flashing red goal balls. The six emeralds come in different colours, yellow, pink, blue, green, red, and white. Since their are only six emeralds, and seven are needed for Super Sonic, you cannot become Super Sonic. You just get to see the good ending, which isn't that good anyway!

Genocide City Zone

Not much is known about this Zone because it use taken out of the final version in the U.S. version.

Super Secret Area

Use the debug code, and enter a Special Stage. Use the debug mode to go outside the walls. You will fall and sometimes end in a different part with more emeralds and 1-Up coins (though the 1-Up coins have never given me an extra life, even though they are shown in the manual). I have even gotten two emeralds in the same level because they were right beside each other!
