The Story

This game picks up where Sonic 2 for the Genesis left off. After saving South Island from Robotnik's first assault (Sonic 2 for Genesis), things have been too quiet for comfort. So, Sonic the Hedgehog left the island to find other adventures around Mobius! Upon his return, he discovered that all of his friends were gone. Confused, he went back to his digs to think, and finds a note from Tails! Robotnik had made Tails write the note, which commanded Sonic to collect the six Chaos Emeralds and bring them to him if he ever wanted to see his friends again....Welcome to Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the second Sonic game to appear on Game Gear as well as the first Game Gear game featuring Miles "Tails" Prower! But Tails isn't playable - why? Doctor Robotnik has returned and since his defeat in Sonic 2 for Genesis he's wanted revenge on the duo that destroyed the prototype Death Egg! Tails has been captured by Doc Robotnik and it is your job as Sonic to rescue your best friend from the evil doctor's clutches! This game is one of the harder of the bunch as it consists of the Underground Zone, complete with one of the hardest sonic bosses, Sky High Zone, Aqua Lake Zone, a return to the Green Hills Zone, Gimmick Mountain Zone, The Scrambled Egg Zone and the return of the Silver Sonic, and Robotnik's newest creation and Tails' holding cell...The Crystal Egg Zone!!!

My Thoughts

This was a fun game to play, harder than Sonic 1 for game gear. The main down points are that it wasn't any longer than Sonic 1, and after the first level, it seems to go down hill from there. Though it is fun, and recomended to the avid Sonic player.

The Underground Zone

Being the first level, this is obviously the easiest level in the game. Just remember to watch out for pits the spikes that cover the ground, and you also have to keep an eye out for falling spikes as you ride through this zone. Act 3 is surprisingly hard. For some reason, Robotnik saves you from falling into spikes and dieing, and carries you over to a strange looking "claw bot" thingy that wants nothing more than to eat you up! Touch it once, and you die. Touch any of the balls that bounce down from the left, and you die. Aviod the balls and let them nail the claw bot. You have to make very well timed jumps to avoid the metal balls and let them hit the bot. Six hits will send him packing. Remember to go to the right and free your friends from the prison egg!

Sky High Zone

This zone is much harder than the first, with the exception of the boss. To beat this zone, you have to learn how to use the hang glider. It is actually very hard to get used to, and I know it killed me a few dozen times before you get it down. Here's how its done right: Right after you touch the hang glider press Back for a moment, then let go and let Sonic glide for a moment. Keep repeating that pattern of holding Back, letting Sonic glide, than holding Back again, and so on. Pressing Forward will send you flyng to the ground (if there is any). In Act 1, the only times you really need to press Forward is when you come to a passage between spikes that you must glide through, so press forward and angle down on the D-pad to navigate through. When you get to Act 2, you will find that you can stand on some clouds and some clouds have springs hidden within them. But beware, most clouds are just normal clouds that youfall through thanks to our good friend gravity. There are spots in this zone where the wind blows up to push your glider up into the air, so be aware and make sure you're angling up so that the wind will catch you and throw you up. Compared to the last boss, this one is a snap. At the beginning, 8 tiny bouncer bots appear that you must destroy. After they are gone, you will fall through the cover of clouds down to another layer of cloud below. You will know see 4 eggs that bounce bots come out of. Quickly destory them all and the bouncer bots are toast. Next, a pelican bot's head will stick out of the clouds. To defeat this bot, you have to jump on his head 6 times. He will fire a few shots at you, but they are easy to avoid, due to their lack of speed.Once he is defeated, run to the right and free the animals from their prison!

Aqua Lake Zone

It couldn't be a Sonic game with out an underwater level and those little bubles of air, right? Well, welcome to Aqua Lake Zone. The first act is easy if you skip across the water. To do this, run out to the water as fast as you can and keep jumping. If you perform it correctly, you should jump across the water to the next platform, so do it again! If you do fall underwater though, don't forget you muss breath by inhaling a little air bubble, or jumping out of the water. Now Act 2 is a lot harder... You can't skip across it like Act 1, so don't get your hopes up. You'll have to stay underwater, so keep finding air! Watch for the crab bots that walk and float around. Also keep an eye out for spikes on the ceiling and the floor. The spears from Sonic 1 reappear in this act, so watch for them to pop out from the walls. And the tubes that teleport you appear in this act. Keep on going, and don't give up and you'll eventually get to Act 3. This boss is very easy. The first thing this seal bot will do is fire his nose at you, which you can jump out of the way of easily. Now, jump on his head and hopefully you'll continue to bounce on it. The next step is to run to the right of the screen, and the seal will move underneath you. Eventually, you'll bounce off his head unintentionally. Next, the seal boss bot will tilt its head up and his nose will start to pump up water. This is where you can hit it. Jump at him and hit his nose. It will explode. The seal will grow it back, and start over. Continue your pattern and destroy his nose 6 times to finsh him.

Green Hills Zone

This is an extremly easy straight forward level. Heres what to do, run to the right, and bam, you'll be done. Just be on the look out for the four new badniks in the level. The boss is also easy. It is a hogbot that only has four attacks, learn them and he's simple. His four attacks are rolling to the other side of the screen (jump him), flying straight across to the other side (jump over him), jump in the air to the other side (run under him), or the hardest one, he'll jump in the air to the other side then immediatly roll back (run under than quickly jump over him on his way back). Regardless of the attack, after it's done, he'll start actting like an ape, waving around his arms and smashing his feet on the ground, NOW hit him. It takes eight hits to finsih him. **Note** All of you hard core Sonic fans should notice that the music to this level is the song "You Can Do Anything" from the Japanese Sonic CD soundtrack.

Gimmick Mountain Zone

This level is the toughest yet for this game. Act 1 is full of giant spinning wheels (a la Sonic 1), a lot of spikes, and bouncing badniks. This act is pretty straight forward, with the difference that the end is located at the bottom left, instead of the top right. Act 2 is much like Act 1, but with bomb badniks. Watch for them and avoid them as they explode. I will also spare you the pain and anguish that I had playing this level. BECAREFUL when rolling down slopes. Sometimes they'll lead you right into a spiked wall, which, believe me, will cheese you right off! Enter Act 3. This level's only thing to notice is the moving platforms. They seem to carry on were you want to go, but they will change directions rather quickly and fly you right into spikes. So keep focused and be ready to jump off when needed. The boss is very easy. The big drill badnik boss will come down, with spikes on its back. He will try to run you over, so jump over him. He will run into the wall and (conviently) pulls his spikes in. Jump on him now. Watch out for the three pieces of rock that he nocks down at you. Eight hits will kill it.

Scrambled Egg Zone

Now you enter the most annoying level in this game, Scrambled Egg Zone. Acts 1 and 2 are mazes with you trying to navigate through what seems to be warp tunnel after warp tunnel. Watch out for spikes too. There is no real way of telling you where to go, as I'm not sure my self (if anyone knows the pattern, e-mail me). Just rember where you've been and choose a different way. With a little luck and a lot of pattence, you will end up in Act 3. You will face off with Mecha Sonic. He has three attacks. He will blast across the screen at you (jump over him), he will swing a claw out at you (jump away to dodge it), but usually, he'll jump over to the other side of the screen. After each attack, he is valerable, so hit him. He is tougher than usual, and takes 14 hits to kill. If you collected all the emeralds (go to the cheats section) you will go to the next level, if not, game over!

Crystal Egg Zone

This is the true last level to the game. Don't get confused by all the colours in the background, because your not done yet. This level is actually pretty easy. To beat Act 1 easily, don't fall down, but use the vertical springs to keep up. If you fall there are a lot of spikes you will have to navigate through. There are also those big spinning mace balls on chains first seen in Sonic 1. Also, smaller versions of those spinning gears from Gimmick Mountain Zone are here, and use them the same way to send you flying into the air. Act 2 is easier than Act 1! There are more mace balls, but fewer spikes, so watch yourself and on to the final battle! The first thing you'll notice in Act 3 is that it looks like an entire different zone. The sky has no more colours, its now black. And there is just one warp tube which takes you to the evil Dr. Robotnik himself! He is in a machine which takes up the entire room, but don't be intimidated, Sonic can do it! He is actually pretty easy. Heres the trick, hit him once, than jump into the warp tunnels around the screen. You will continue to roll around in them until you press up or down by an exit. Stay in the tubes as he dose his two attacks, the multi-ball attack, and the electrocute attack. After his electrocute attack is finished, jump out of the tubes, hit him, and jump back in. Eight hits and you win!! Robotnik will try to escape, but you will chase him down. In his last effort to escape, he jumps into a teleporter and beams away, but the good news is Tails beams in! Great job!!!

The Ending

This ending is kinda dissapointing. If you got all the emeralds, or not, the ending is the same. Sonic will be running through Green Hills Zone, while the credits run under him. It will eventually say "And You" and Sonic will stop. A Tails constilation will be in the sky, and the word "End" will drop down. Then "Game Over" appears, after all our hard work too!!

Location of the Choas Emeralds

Note: All emeralds are found in Act 2 of the first 5 zones in the game.
The Underground Zone: To get to the end of this round, you have to take a plunger to the right. Instead of doing that, take the plunger to the left. Go to the top of the hill, get the ring monitor, and push "down" on the D-button to make Sonic go really fast. Take the rail cart. Stay in the rail cart for a little bit past the end of the track. Jump off towards the upper right. The emerald is there.

Sky High Zone: This is one that I needed help to get. Towards the middle of the round, there will be a row in the clouds with rings. There will be one plunger next to it at a higher level, and another plunger a little bit past this one. Take the latter plunger at an angle towards the right. You'll be on an invisible platform in the clouds. Jump off the clouds past the last cloud. There will be an invisible plunger. Take this plunger towards the right (it helps if you are at an angle to the very right) and the emerald will be at the highest point.

Aqua Lake Zone: There will be a maze towards the middle of the round (not the first maze!). Press the D-button left.

Green Hills Zone: When you get towards the end, you'll see some plungers with rings that you won't quite be able to reach. Go back to the plungers on the left. Use them to get to the right.

Gimmick Mountain Zone: This one is tricky. Towards the beginning of the round, you'll see a diagonal area that has spikes coming down. There is a hidden room here. To access it, jump to the left while you are almost at the top. At the very left, there are flywheels (with two more secret hideouts to the left containing free Sonics!). Take the flywheels up. The emerald is towards your right.

Scrambled Egg Zone: This one is very easy. Just do one thing, beat Silver Sonic, then you get the sixth and last emerald (maybe it's not so easy!).
