The Beginning
Spyder Web Design was founded in 2001 by Brandon Martinez and Michael Mitchell. Spyder’s start-up funds came by way of a grant from AND 1 Basketball or more specifically, the CEO of AND 1, Jay Gilbert. Spyder Web Design was started in West Philadelphia, based in an establishment called The Enterprise Center This establishment is dedicated to nurturing urban youth with a business idea and turning them into successful entrepreneurs.
The People
Brandon Martinez-
A sophomore at Roman Catholic High School in Center City Philadelphia, Brandon is the CEO of Spyder Web Design. After attending a program at The Enterprise Center, Brandon was motivated to start his own business. For guidance and resources, Brandon began to attend the after-school program at The Enterprise Center. There, he attended classes and met weekly with his business coach, Lee Huang. In the process, Brandon recruited schoolmate Michael Mitchell to work for him. After several weeks of preparation and fine-tuning of his business plan, Brandon was prepared to travel to the AND1 Headquarters in Paoli, PA, and present his business to the multi-millionaire CEO of AND 1, Jay Gilbert. Jay Gilbert was very impressed with Brandon’s presentation. So impressed, that Jay offered Brandon a paid summer internship in his company’s Web Department. Spyder Web Design was the catalyst of a major program called the Angel Network. This program was initiated by a large grant, given to The Enterprise Center from AND 1. This grant would be used to fund the start-up of many youth-run businesses, the 1st of which being Brandon’s.
Michael Mitchell-
Also a sophomore at Roman, Mike is the Head Designer of Spyder Web Design. Though both Brandon and Mike design and code, Mike’s title states such. Mike was recruited into Spyder Web Design, by his now employee, Brandon. He enthusiastically attended classes and also met with his business coach Lee Huang. Mike is Brandon’s right-hand-man, and Brandon could not have started Spyder Web Design had it not been for Mike’s support, vision, and motivation.
