The Story: As the show starts, the first scene looks like the one on the Game Boy game, with Gengar and Nidorino battling, but then it transforms into a huge arena. It cuts to Ash's room, where Ash is watching the battle. Then his mom comes in and tell him he needs to go to bed. Ash explains that he can't sleep, so Ash's mom changes it to a show with Professor Oak exlpaining the 3 starting pokémon. After the show, Ash goes to sleep he has a dream about each three pokemon: Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. He dreams that he's throwing Pokéballs with the pokémon inside. The trouble starts when Ash somehow accidentally throws his Pokéball alarm clock. When Ash wakes up, he realizes he is late and takes a mad dash to Prof. Oak's lab. There he bumps into Gary, who brags that he got the best pokémon and that he'll be the world's best pokémon master. He leaves and while Ash is fuming, Prof. Oak shows up. He take Ash inside, but Ash finds out there are no more pokémon left. Then, Professor Oak takes out a another Pokéball. Ash opens it and a Pikachu is inside! Ash picks him up, but Pikachu seems to hate being held by strangers, so he shocks Ash and Prof. Oak. When he goes outside, he sees his mom and some other friends. His mom gives him supplies, then says that Pikachu is kind of weird. You can probably guess what happens next. Pikachu gets ticked off and shocks everyone. Next, we see Ash dragging Pikachu along with him with the clothesline the his mom gave him. Finally, Ash tries to make a truce with Pikachu by untying the line. Then a Pidgey appears and when Ash send Pikachu out to fight it, he just runs up a tree. So Ash tries to capture it himself. After a couple unsuccessful attempts, he spots a group of them and tries to hit them with rocks. He misses them, then he sees another lone bird. he throw a rock at it. He hits it, but it turns out to be a Spearow. The Spearow attacks Ash and Pikachu, but Pikachu shocks the Spearow. Hurt, the Spearow calls for back-up. Ash and Pikachu take off with the Spearows hot on their heels. Then Ash comes upon a waterfall and they jump in. The view cuts to Misty who is fishing. She thinks she gets a bite, but pulls up the soggy duo. She's concerned about Pikachu, but not about Ash. She tells them of a Pokémon Center in Viridian City. So Ash jumps on Misty's bike, says he'll return it and takes off just as the Spearows arrive. It startes to look real bad when it starts to rain an Ash hits a rock. They fall and Ash tells Pikachu to get into the Pokéball. Then as Ash tries to take on the Spearows, Pikachu climbs up Ash, catches a thunderbolt, and magnifies its power, blowing away the Spearows and toasting Misty's bike. Finally, they make it to the city.

The Good: Nice story line with a wide variety of Pokemon. Quite a few funny parts, thought it was pretty cool how Ash had all of that cool Pokemon stuff in his room.

The Bad: Pikachu isn't as cute in this episode. GARY!!!!!! HE IS SUCH A FREAK!!!

Who's That Pokemon? Pikachu!

Most Memorable Quote: Professor Oak (while Pikachu is shocking Ash in the lab): "It's also known as an electric mouse. It's usually shy, but can sometimes have an electric personality."

Ash (after Pikachu is finished shocking him): "I see what ya mean."

Professor Oak: "Shocking, isn't it?"

Final Thoughts: What's with Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander when Ash dreams of them? They all make weird sounds instead of saying their names. Also, in the Japanese version of this episode, Misty slaps(!) Ash after Misty asks if they are all right.
