Kakarot's Promise

Chapter Sixteen

Prince Vegeta held her in a choke hold. She wasn't a fighter, but Sonya gave him 100 percent every morning. He tried to teach her a simple block, she took the full blow and he had to wait until she recovered. "This is pointless," he growled. "Even Cyan's half-breeds can give me a better challenge."

"Let me go, Vegeta." He did just the opposite, amused that her struggling intensified. "You've prooved your point!"

"Quitting so soon," he taunted. "No one can learn how to fight in two days."

"I'm too old. All I know is total pacifism." Vegeta snorted, but he didn't comment. His father didn't blame her upbringing, only that she be given time to adjust. Sonya had never seen the devestation and what she had lost as a result of the war.

"No, Sonya. You're not too old. All you need is a valid reason that our way of life is necessary for survival. Imagine the Murians. Do you love them?"

Sonya froze, not liking where Vegeta was going. He asked her again, softer this time. Why was he being so gentle all of a sudden? He hated everything about her, didn't he? "Hai. They're a peaceful race. They would never harm anyone."

"You've seen Tasmir?"

"The feline woman? Hai. Isn't her race peaceful? I've heard of them, but noone's ever actually seen one. Where'd you find her?"

"She's the last of her kind. Tasmir saved my life when I was a year old. When she needed to, she transformed and fought my enemies. She didn't have to, but as a result, she's here. Tasmir doesn't regret her decision. Desparate times require us to do things we normally wouldn't do. The Murians will meet the same fate if nothing is done about the Ice-jins."

Vegeta didn't wait for the information to sink in, "They will enslave them first, rape the women, slaughter the children and destroy the planet. Those that survive, will be forced to serve him, turned into hateful killing machines. That was my fate. Thanks to my mother, whom no one's seen since the war began, I'm here today. My father hates not being by her side, but he knows this is her way of protecting him."

"Why? He looks powerful."

"My father equals her both mentally and physically. My mother is a royal guard, a fighter and his mate. She would gladly give her life so that her mate and children shall live. Mother fails to realize that with her death, my father will die as well."

Vegeta released Sonya, but she didn't move. "We're finished," she asked. He snorted. "I need time to think, Vegeta."

"Two days; that's all I'll give you." Sonya nodded, left alone in the training room. Moving to the wall, she tapped a few buttons and pulled up the history log. "Computer, show me the logs on the Ice-jin wars. I want to see everything!"

Vegeta found his father in a separate training room, sweat slidng down his back. He looked angry, his movements controlled and deadly. Usually if his father was in bad mood, it had something to do with his mother. 'What'd you do now, mother?'

As if reading his mind, "She went to the Ice-jin world with Kakarot."

Vegeta gaped, "She's not that stupid! That's not even a fight; it's suicide!"

"You underestimate your mother's abilities, son." King Vegeta grabbed a towel and wiped the sweat from his skin. "There were times when all of us saw hints of it, but she's normally to trusting and compassionate to release that side of herself."

"The computers say that you were a legend? Was it wrong?"

King Vegeta smiled, heading towards the bridge. "I lost control only once. The trials were over in five seconds."

Prince Vegeta blinked. "Why haven't we stopped the Ice-jins then?"

"Finding Kakarot and yourself took top priority. The Ice-jins would have used either of you against us. Now that we have Kakarot;" His father's eyes were glowing, his teeth extended; "The Ice-jins are going to finally discover the full power of the Saiya-jin race. Bardock will join us shortly."

"What are we going to do?"

"We're going to wage a war the galaxy has not seen since the First Wars of Vegeta-sai! All the Saiya-jins will unleash their rage and direct it towards all Ice-jins!"

"Our rage?"

"Your mother discovered that our emotions fuel our power. Turles has gone to Namek. Our objective is to target all of the Ice-jins' military bases."

Vegeta could barely contain his excitement. At last he would fight the Ice-jins. "What about mother?"

"She's chosen her battle."

"Mother?"

Lema concentrated, trying to block her mate's anger from her mind. She knew he wouldn't agree with her decision and she only hoped that he would forgive her. Lema had to win first. "Second thoughts, Kakarot?"

"No." Kakarot had seen her every thought and memory, including the one where Cooler had attacked her while pregnant with himself and Vegeta. The planet was cold, covered in nothing but ice. There was no sign of life except for a castle in the distance, surrounded by mountains that made everything tiny in comparison.

"Let's go."

Icy winds battered their bodies and they had to force themselves to focus on the castle in front of them and avoid several patrols. The Ice-jins had no problems with surviving on the harsh planet, little sunlight hitting the surface.

"We need to get inside first, and then take them out one-by-one. No prolonging any battle; we need to conserve our energy."

"How many Ice-jins are we looking at?"

Lema shrugged, "Six or seven thousand. The computer hasn't been updated in awhile."

Kakarot loved the odds; it reminded him of the times he fought the red ribbon army and won. Not expecting an attack, infilitrating the castle was simple. They explored every room, every crack, finally reaching the dungeouns. Lema and Kakarot swallowed the bile that rose in their throats, the stench overwhelming.

Prisoners hung from the walls, some with thorn crowns, wrist and ankle bands, while others were strapped to metal wires hooked to electrical currents. Another room held a dead female, her womb ripped open and the baby no where to be seen. There were no guards as she entered the room, ripping the prisoners free.

They were too weak to stand and they looked at her, pleading that she kill them. Lema had to turn away, unable to bear their sorry existence. Some of them were of races she had never heard of, probably the last of their kind. To her right was a door with no window, behind it came a low whimper and clawing at the wood.

Unable to stop herself, she approached, ignoring the instinct to run. Something told her she knew this creature, familiar to the Saiya-jin race through legends and stories meant to frighten children into obedience. Her father had told her of the Wolf race, a few days away from Vegeta-sai. Did she dare release this creature?

Lema glanced at Kakarot and he nodded. Like her, he wouldn't allow any more creatures to suffer at the hands of the Ice-jins, even if they were attacked out of fear. Sliding back the bolt, the door swung open and she gasped. Staring at her with blue eyes, the silver hair on his neck raised, was the largest wolf she had ever seen. Around his neck were several chains, keeping it from attacking her.

"I'm here to free you," she whispered, keeping her hands where it could see them. The animal growled, but understood that she was his only chance. "Kakarot, get the chains on the left!" Lema moved to the right, straining to pull the ki resistant metal from the walls. After several attempts, she finally succeeded. The only thing left to do, was to snap the collar from the wolf's neck.

"Will you accept my help?"

'Do you fear me, little one?' Lema rolled her eyes. Would she forever be called something so demeaning. She thought she heard the creature laugh.

"If you don't kill me, the Ice-jins will. I'll take my chances with you."

'Why do you come here, Saiya-jin? You're race has long ago lost the strength and heart to fight the Ice-jin race.'

Lema laughed, finding comfort in the large wolf's doubt. "Granted, the Saiya-jin race is no longer what it should have been, but those that remain are now fighting for their lives. We will never stop until all Ice-jins are destroyed!" Reaching up, she grasped the collar and screamed in pain. Kakarot rushed up to her, surprised to see burnt marks on her hands. "Damn, I've never seen anything like it!"

'Don't break what can't be broken, little one. The Ice-jins will soon return.'

"How long have you been here?"

'A week. My mate was taken from me, she lies in the other room.'

"You can change shapes?"

'Hai. My strength comes from the wolf form.'

Lema gritted her teeth in determination. She would see no more people or creatures suffer at the hands of the Ice-jins, including a wolf that could snap her in two. Legend said that the wolf and Saiya-jin races had been at war since the history of her planet. She didn't care. Grasping the collar, she ignored the pain and screamed, powering up in her rage.

'Little one, save your energy...' The wolf sounded tired, but he was intrigued by her inner strength. He felt the collar crack and with another burst of rage, it snapped. He was free. The wolf stared at the Saiya-jin female in stunned disbelief. 'I am your enemy...,' he said curiously, sniffing her face. Her hands were badly burnt, but she ignored the pain and stared at the ancient with fearless eyes. 'Why?'

"A common enemy brings us together and you have done nothing to me. The past is the past and I will leave it there. Will you?"

'Show me your hands, Saiya-jin.' She did as he asked, flinching when his tongue licked the black marks. To her surprise, the pain lessened and her hands healed. 'You intrigue me, Saiya-jin. Do you intend to fight the Ice-jins with only two?'

"That was the plan. You're free to go, ancient one."

'No child. The Ice-jins declared war on the wolves the moment they destroyed my world.'

"Mother, most of the prisoners won't live."

"Make them comfortable."

"There are more. The Ice-jins bring in new prisoners and place them in cells on the floor above us. They're later brought down here for experiements."

'They also have underground tunnels where they mine minerals from the mountains.' The wolf told her.

Lema was forming a plan. If she freed the prisoners and the slaves, they could turn on their masters. "I'll take the mines."

"But..." Kakarot protested, knowing the danger his mother was stepping into. She shook her head, "I need your help, Kakarot. Please, release the prisoners first and then join me in the mines."

"Hai."

'I will go with her,' the wolf said. Lema chose not to argue, having no control over the ancient creature. The wolf race could live for thousands of years and seldom forgave an enemy.

"Damn her!" King Vegeta snarled. "I'm going to throttle that woman! Does she ever think?"

Cyan and Prince Vegeta glanced at King Vegeta, navigating towards a planet known to have several military posts loyal to the Ice-jins. "What happened?" Cyan asked. When it came to his twin, anything was possible. Even he couldn't comprehend when Vegeta told him about Lema's last stunt.

"She formed an alliance with a race that have been our enemies since the First Wars."

"The Wolf Race!" Cyan gasped. "They didn't kill her!"

"There's only one and no, he agreed to a truce. Dammit! She takes too many risks!"

Prince Vegeta laughed, "Did you expect any less from her? Mother has always done the unexpected and if she feels any compassion towards someone, she'll never attack or kill them. The First Wars occured five thousand years ago."

"This wolf is an ancient! He could be one of the ones we fought during those wars! They never forget and they rarely forgive."

"What happened?"

"A saiya-jin killed one of the cubs in a fight. They retaliated with the boy's life; he was the son of one of the royal guards. The war lasted for several years and both sides suffered heavy losses."

Turles stared at the green Namek, hiding his impatience. "What is your purpose with the dragon balls and how did you discover of their existence?"

"The guardian of Earth told us of their existence. We come here to stop future planets from being destroyed. The Saiya-jin race is in a galactic war with the Ice-jins. If we're successful, the destruction of other planets will cease."

"We have heard of these Ice-jins and powerful they are. So be it, Turles of Vegeta-sai. We will give you the dragon balls and pray that your intentions are as you say." The elders each presented a large golden ball, all having a certain number of stars in the center.

Parunga was huge, blocking out the three suns in the sky. "I wish for all the destruction and death caused by the Ice-jins to be reversed."

The Nameks gasped, but the dragon easily granted his wish. "Send Jasmine to my brother until the war is over. At that time, she is to be sent straight to Kakarot if he survives."

"Finally, I wish to join my daughter on the Ice-jin homeworld along with King Vegeta! This battle is not hers to fight alone!"

Jasmine and Namek vanished, quickly replaced by the sound of clanking hammers and whips cracking against flesh. "Dad?" He turned, surprised to see Lema and a large wolf. "Impossible," he choked. She felt a tail wrap around her leg and tighten, Lema was too shocked to speak.

He was furious with her, but he said nothing as he turned to the large, silver wolf. Lema quickly introduced them, hoping to stop a confrontation between them. "This is Ryos. He's one of the ancient wolves from the First Wars."

Turles paled, but chose not to say anything to anger the wolf. He trusted his daughters judgement and lowered himself to watch what was happening around him. Keeping his hand on her back, King Vegeta did the same. It had been years since she had seen either her father or mate and she had no choice to ignore the pain of their anger. They had a right to be, but Lema would have gladly made the same decisions."

A cry caught Lema's attention; she stared in stunned disbelief. Her heart felt as if it had stopped, a single tear slid down her face. Of sorrow or rage, neither the wolf, Vegeta or Turles found out when she lunged from their hiding place with an insane scream.

"Lema!" Turles roared, trying to catch up with his daughter. Surrounded on all sides, he had his own battle to fight, the wolf in another location. King Vegeta was no where to be seen.

All she could see was a red haze of hate, uncaring of the pleading cries to be spared. Her eyes glowed a feral red, her fingernails extended and she snarled at the Ice-jins that attacked her from all sides. She ignored their weak attempts at trying to kill her, laughed as their whips bit into her flesh. Lema didn't care. Hovering in a corner, blood running down their backs and faces, were two children; Saiya-jin females. Where they had come from didn't matter to Lema. She will save them. "Bastards! I'll kill you!"

In their arms, they held a small bundle. It released a hungry cry. This was why they were being punished. The small girls had spotted it in a corner, being prepared for a sacrifice. The Ice-jins had left it, laughing about how they were going to hear the baby scream in pain before it died. They had tried to escape and were caught near the entrances of the mine.

"Look at her fight, Kyra. She looks just like us!"

"Hai. Natasha, we have to run!"

Kyra screamed, sheltering the infant with her body as an Ice-jin raised it's hand to kill them. The blow never came and she looked up to find herself in the arms of King Vegeta, his eyes filled with anger.

Ryos was quickly beside him, carrying Natasha in his powerful jaws. Running to her sister, they looked at the wolf with curiosity. Lowering his nose to the small infant he growled in surprise. "Where did you find him?"

"The Ice-jins were going to kill him. We took him and ran. Did we do bad?"

Ryos protectively curled around the children, his gaze falling on the Saiya-jin king. "Go to your mate, Saiya-jin. These little ones will be safe from harm."

King Vegeta nodded, but was thrown to the ground face first. His back hurt and it was difficult to move. An evil chuckle made the fur on his tail rise; "King Cold!" he spat.

"Monkey!"

Kyra and Natasha moved closer to Ryos, terrified of the Ice-jins King. He had killed thousands of slaves. "Run!" They told King Vegeta.

"No! They took my mate, my sons and my world!" King Vegeta remembered the last time he had lost control; he did so now and the power was overwhelming. "Ryos, get them and leave!"

Standing above the fight was Cooler, his lip pulled back in a snarl. He hated the female Saiya-jin. Always a thorn in his side, he attacked, hitting her hard in the side. All actions ceased, giving room to the two fighters. Lema growled, wiping the blood from her chin. Her ribs were broken; she didn't care. Cooler chuckled, "I will enjoy your screams, female..." he hissed.

"I'd die before I let you touch me, Ice-jin! You will die, Cooler! How dare you take my sons and enslave my race!"

"We saved him. The Ice-jins were going to kill him."

Turles started to go after her when an arm touched his shoulder. "This is mother's fight! Help me fight the other Ice-jins!"

Turles didn't recognize the tall man, his eyes an emerald green and his hair a golden blond. "Wrong monkey!" Kakarot turned to see another Ice-jin hover in front of him. "My brother will eliminate the female, but she will watch her son beg for mercy before we kill her."

Kakarot laughed, stepping into a side stance. "Come, Ice-jin!"

Turles smirked, the boy was so much like his mother. "Frieza, the war ends here." Frieza powered up, unconcerned about the threat the Saiya-jins presented. Their race was weak, he had seen this through the prisoners Nappa had brought to him.

Prince Vegeta and Cyan were fighting back-to-back, surrounded by dead bodies. They had suffered their own injuries, but both were smiling as if they were enjoying a stroll in the park. "You can't win!" an Ice-jin sneered, preparing to throw another attack. "Why won't you die?"

"Not until I've seen my mother!" Vegeta roared.

"It would have been amusing to see her face," came a voice from the shadows, "to see her expression when she discovered that Kakarot and yourself had been kidnapped."

"Show yourself!" Cyan demanded. Three Saiya-jins appeared, two familiar to Cyan. The other wore a silver collar around his neck, his eyes strangely blank. "Paragus, Nappa!"

"Broli, kill him. Leave the shorter one alive."

Broli made no sound, his power immediately exploding. Cyan had seen his sister transform into Super Saiya-jin two or three time, but not with the ease that Broli did. He was quiet and fast, striking before Cyan could blink. He coughed, blood spitting up into the palm of his hand.

"Cyan!" Vegeta threw himself in front of the next blow, landing heavily onto the ground. He tried to get back up, "Damn... it... What the hell are you?"

Nappa and Paragus laughed. "He's the new prodigy; the ultimate weapon to rule the world! Even the Ice-jins feared his blinding rage, but we found a way to control it!"

"You're controling his mind!" Cyan spat with disgust, somehow managing to stand. "Broli," he whispered, "free yourself of their grasp! Do you not wish to be free!"

He thought he saw a flicker in Broli's eyes, but it was quickly gone as he attacked again. Cyan never thought anything could hurt so badly. In minutes he was barely hanging on to consciousness. "Sis, I don't now how to reach him."

'Use your rage,' she whispered. 'Remember all that have suffered, remember Tasmir and what they'll do to her. Nappa has been known to rape the females he captures. He tried it the first day we met in the castle.'

"Why didn't you tell me?" he snarled.

'I didn't think it was relevant. Besides, Nappa was child's play.'

Cyan closed his eyes, fooling his enemy into thinking he had given up. People like Nappa had enslaved his sister, had beaten her time and time again until she had had enough. He trembled and the pain lessened until all he could feel was a burning desire to kill and to hate. Broli too was nothing more than a puppet, used in a game that Nappa and Paragus thought they could win.

"Kill him!" Paragus roared, afraid of Cyan's growing power. "Do it now!" Broli took a step forward and hesitated. He regonized this rage, before everything had gone numb. He had been born the day the planet was destroyed; he had felt the cries of all the Saiya-jins before they died in a split second. Broli had snapped, immediately becoming a Super Saiya-jin. The collar had always been around his neck, replaced every two years to adjust to his growing powers.

"No," he said.

"You will do as I say!" Paragus snarled, punching his son across the face. Broli didn't even flinch, grabbing his father by the throat. "What... are you doing? I'm... your father."

"You are nothing to me!" Broli growled, hearing the sound of his father's bones cracking. His eyes bulged from his head and the color of skin turned a deep purple. Nappa started to attack, but screamed as his tail was ripped from his spine.

He turned, his dying screams cut off as Cyan tore the tongue from his mouth and snapped Nappa's neck. Paragus soon joined him and Broli faced the Saiya-jin without fear or remorse. Cyan came closer, reaching for the collar on Broli's neck. "Don't move," he growled. Soon Broli was free and he released all his power in a single wave. There was nothing left, the buildings, the enemy; only Vegeta, Cyan and Broli survived on the planet.

"Incredible," Vegeta whispered. "Will you join us," he asked.

"Hai, but only until all slaves are freed." Broli did not calm and his rage only continued to grow from planet-to-planet. Soon all the worlds except for the home world of the Ice-jins were free of the Ice-jin's control.

Vegeta found her in the training rooms, attempting to dogdge a ki attack from the computer. She succeeded, but only barely as she hit the floor. Sonya was unaware of the second attack. In seconds, she was held tightly against him, Vegeta walking down the hallways. "I don't understand."

"You will no longer fight." He didn't ask her, nor could she break free of his grip. "This is pointless," he sighed in frustration.

They came to his chambers and he tossed her onto his bed, moving to the bathroom before returning with several bandages. "Remove your shirt," he ordered.

"No!" Sonya tried to bolt for the door, but Vegeta was quicker as he slammed the door shut and pulled her close.

"You're bleeding," he growled, moving towards her sleeve and yanking on it. The silky material ripped easily and she blushed as he slowly medicated each bruise and cut.

"I'm not helpless," she protested weakly, confused and frustrated.

He didn't smile and he rarely laughed. Sonya wondered if it was because of the war; she doubted it. It was something else and she could see it in his eyes as he stubbornly doctored all her injuries. "I can learn to fight," she finally said.

"No."

"Why? Is it because I'm weak? Vegeta, give me a chance..."

"I said no!" Sonya fell back, trapped between the bed and Vegeta. He hovered above her, his arms braced on both sides of her body. Vegeta trembled, but he didn't move. "You're not a fighter, nor will I see further injuries because you wish to prove something to me. Sonya, you've had a good and sheltered life and I have no right to make you change. It took courage to leave the Murians, to a group of people you had never met. No, you are not weak."

Sonya shifted her weight, but Vegeta thought she was trying to run again and pinned her with a single hand, the other reaching out to touch her cheek. He was always so angry, but now he looked vulnerable and... Did she see fear in his eyes?

"What's wrong?"

"It doesn't matter."

"It's your mother; isn't it?"

Vegeta hesitated before he nodded. "She's dying, but she won't stop until all the Ice-jins are dead."

'She will not die, brother!'

This was the first time that his brother had spoken to him and Vegeta latched onto the connection as if he would loose it forever. The voice laughed, amused by Vegeta's protective streak. 'I will bring her home, Vegeta. Have faith in her? Mother has never stopped hoping that she would one day see both of us togehter. I will give her that wish. We need to make sure she never has to fight again, to live the rest of her life in peace.'

'Hai!'
