Kaylee shoved her light brown hair behind her ears and wiped her feet on the doormat. She hitched her bag up higher onto her shoulder and opened the front door, walking inside. "Auntie Jamie? I'm home."
A laugh came from the dining room. "God help me."
Kaylee put a hurt expression on her face as she poked her head into the room. "Hey."
Jamie stood up from the table and gave her niece a hug. "How was school?"
Kaylee rolled her eyes. "Crap. More of that Pythagoras junk. I mean, it's quite a simple concept, and yet ol' Garbo insists on us learning it so much that I can recite it in my sleep."
Jamie laughed and pulled Kaylee's school bag out of her grip. "Well, learn it."
Kaylee grabbed her bag back and stuck her tongue out.
Jamie gave her niece a pinch and pushed her down the hall to her room. She turned and went back to the table. Bills. Oh boy.
She sighed and took a sip of Coke. Kaylee was a bright young girl. Too bright. She wanted to do computer programming for a living. She was already taking courses in highschool, and she kept their 2 computers on top condition.
"Not to mention the huge phone bill for the internet." Jamie mumbled, and set the phone bill down, chewing thoughtfully on her pen.
Kaylee burst into the room, all smiles. "So, how was your day, 'Granny'?"
Jamie gave Kaylee an affectionate smack. "I'm not that old, thank you. I'm only 39."
Kaylee sat down and gagged. "That's old, Jamie."
Jamie grinned and opened another bill. "Health department." she said aloud.
The young girl made a face. "The people who stuck a pole into my arm?"
She nodded. "Yeah. Blood tests are back..." she opened the envelope and read the contents. She glanced up at her niece who was twirling her half chewed pen through her fingers. "You're good at science, right?"
Kaylee nodded with a 'duh' expression on her face.
"Well..." Jamie bit her lip. Something seemed amiss. "The blood type O is recessive, right?"
Kaylee nodded again. "That's why it's called the universal donor type. It can be mixed with any blood type and it won't be rejected by the body."
Jamie rolled her eyes. "I knew that. I was just making sure."
"Never know with an old woman." came the teasing reply.
"Well, young'un, what is the type of the blood of a child of 2 O types?"
Kaylee rolled her eyes. "That's easy. You get O. Duh."
Jamie nodded, her brow furrowing. "I thought so..."
| Patient: Kay Lee Harmont
Patient's Blood Type: AB Mother: Kristen Harmont Mother's Blood Type: O Father: Joseph Cooke Father's Blood Type: O |
Dear Miss Browning,
Kay Lee Harmont's blood tests have come back and it is certain: she has a blood type of AB.
Both biological parents have blood type of O. It is not possible for the child to have AB from two O types. The only possibility is for the father to have AB. Mr. Cooke does not have AB. All I can suggest is that Kay Lee Harmont has a different biological father than that of Mr. Cooke.
Sincerely,
Marion J. Greave
