"Jamie? Please understand that I'm here for you." I whispered.
She lay there, eyes closed.
"Jamie? Please talk to me. I need you." I begged.
She turned away slowly.
"If that's the way you feel." I sighed. I couldn't get through to her. She blames me.
I wheeled out of the room and saw Drake sitting on a chair outside. He jumped up, startled.
"Is she okay?" he asked hastily.
I nodded. "Fine."
He sat back down with a deep breath. "Well..."
I watched a nurse walk by. "Where's Heather?"
He frowned. "Can't come. Too busy."
I saw that he was lying. "Why isn't she here?"
Drake raked a hand through his hair. "We're divorcing because I discovered she's with another man." he stopped.
I bit my lip. He was embarrassed.
"She heard about the accident and said that she didn't want to have anything with me, you and Jamie." his face fell as he told me.
He was crushed and he had been trying to protect us all this time. I scratched my palm. "I never liked her." I said loudly in the quiet halls.
He just stared at me blankly.
I was sick of playing savior to everyone. What about me? I was the one in the accident, remember?
"And she never liked me. She doesn't like Jamie, even. Drake, it's no big loss."
He withered.
"But..."
I sighed. "Look, she's left you. She doesn't deserve your love. Jessica's gone. But you still have us. me and Jamie. Just pull through this."
He nodded slightly. "You know what, Kris?"
"What?"
"You sound like a psychiatrist."
I grinned. "Well, thank you."
He nodded. "You're right..." He stood.
I looked up sternly. "Now listen to me carefully."
He nodded.
"One: go home and have a shower. Put some clean clothes on and shave. Two: take a nice long sleep-"
He protested.
"No." I cut him off. "Me and Jamie aren't going anywhere. And we still have the Hansons."
He stopped.
"Three: wake up, drive to Whataburger and when you come back, bring me some good, all American fast food."
He grinned. "Yes sir. That all, sir?"
I nodded. "That's all, soldier. Now go!"
He walked down the hall, and I sat back in my chair, sighing. 3 down, 2 to go. I felt drained.
