"Done!" I cried, startling Jamie from her English essay.
"Shut up! Dad'll kill us!" Jamie hissed, glaring at me.
I stuck my tongue out, but kept quiet. I looked down proudly at my essay, admiring the flourishing handwriting. I had written about 'Why Red is a Crap Color' before, but when Drake Browning had seen my efforts, he told me to get serious. So then I wrote 'Why Home Schooling is a Drag'. Drake had taken that as well, screwed it up, and chucked it in the bin.
Finally, I came up with 'Recycling: We All Need to Do It If We're Gonna Waste Paper'. Drake Browning had seen it, and nodded approvingly. Obviously, he didn't get the meaning behind it.
I leaned back, and rested my eyes. Ever since Drake and Heather Browning had pulled Jess, Jam, and me out of school, and taught us themselves, it had been hell. I was getting higher marks, yes, but I was sick of seeing my sisters' faces everyday. I couldn't eat a pack of chips during maths, couldn't chew gum during English etc. so what was so cool about home school?
I looked up to find Drake leaning over me. "Ah, good." he said, taking the paper, and walking over to Jamie. "You've got 10 minutes left, Jamie, try to speed it up." he told her, and walked out again.
From the look on Jamie's face, I guessed she was far from done.
"Shit!" Jamie hissed, scribbling furiously.
"What's up?" I asked, craning my neck over to see how far Jamie had gotten.
"Shit shit shit shit shit!" Jamie cursed again.
"No thanks." I said.
Jamie stuck her tongue out at me sideways, eyes never leaving the paper, and kept scribbling.
"Dad?" I called to Drake. "Can I get up now?"
There was a moments pause. "Yep." came the faint reply. Probably in the living room, reading my essay.
I shot out of my chair, and stationed myself behind Jamie's chair. "Okay, here's how you do it. The generic characteristics of 'Star Wars' are..." I whispered urgently, Jamie recording.
"Done, Dad!" Jamie cried out, relieved. It was 7 minutes later, and she walked into the living room, where me and Drake were sitting, waiting for our next lesson.
I looked up, and caught the relieved look on Jamie's face. "Good going!" I grinned.
"Thanks." Jamie said gratefully.
"Now that you girls are in such good moods, let's move onto algebra!" Drake clapped his hands together.
We groaned.
