"Come on Aura. This is supposed to be summer vacation. You're supposed to be having fun. Remember that word? Fun?" Zac looked down at me, doing crunches on the floor, and rolled his eyes. "Girls. I'll never understand them," he sighed.
"Boys. Why were they put on earth?" I teased.
"Ok Aura, that's it. If you're not going to quit doing those stupid crunches I'm going to kick you out of my room," he warned.
I rolled my eyes and sat up. "Ok. Are you happy now?" I asked. "Well, what are we going to do now?"
"I don't know, you want to go for a walk?" Zac looked at me for a suggestion.
"Yeah. A walk sounds good to me," I replied. I grabbed a sweatshirt off of the floor and pulled it over my head.
"Hey, that's mine," Zac protested.
"I know, I'm borrowing it," I said with a smile.
"Girls," he muttered shaking his head.
"To lose ten pounds," I answered.
"No seriously," he said.
"I want my parents to get along," I said softly. "I'll probably get a divorce as a birthday present."
"Come on Aura, it can't be that bad," Zac said.
"No Zac it is that bad. You're family loves each other. You go through every day wondering if your new single is going to make it to the top of the charts. I go through every day wondering if my dad will still be there when I come home," I said. I shivered and wrapped my arms around myself, sticking my hands in the sleeves of the sweatshirt I was wearing.
"Cold?" Zac asked.
I nodded as my teeth chattered loudly.
"Here." He slipped out of his over-sized jacket and handed it me.
"But you're going to get cold," I protested.
"Better me than you," he answered. Zac placed the jacket on my shoulders and I slipped inside of it.
"Zac, you know what Simone always tells me?"
"No, but I have a feeling you're going to tell me," he answered.
"She says that it's impossible for us to be best friends," I explained.
"Why?" Zac looked bewildered.
"Because you're a guy and I'm a girl. She said that there's all of this sexual tension building up between us and one day we're going to end up a couple."
"A couple of what?" Zac asked.
"You know what I mean, a couple, an item, boyfriend and girlfriend." I shook my head. "Boys can be so dumb sometimes."
"Do you think that we'll end up a couple one day?" Zac asked.
"What?" His question surprised me. "No way! What we have is so much better than some passing physical attraction."
"Oh." Zac looked down at the cracks in the sidewalk.
"Why? Did you think that we would end up a couple one day?" I inquired. Zac stayed silent, avoiding my gaze. "Zac?"
"Yeah I did Aura. Why, is there something wrong with that?" he asked angrily. "I mean I thought that one day we would just figure out that what we have is more than friendship."
"Zac, I had no idea you felt that way," I said in astonishment.
"Well, now you know how I feel," he grumbled. "I feel like such an idiot."
"Don't. I wouldn't have had the guts to tell you how I felt if I were in your position."
"Look, maybe I should just walk you home," Zac suggested.
"Why? I don't want to go home right now," I argued.
"Aura, I gotta go think. I'll talk to you later ok?"
"Fine," I answered. "You know this is all your fault?"
"My fault? Two seconds ago you were praising me for being honest and now it's my fault we're arguing?" Zac yelled.
"Well, I know that it's not my fault," I snapped.
"I'll see you later." Zac jammed his hands in his pockets and walked off, leaving me standing on the sidewalk watching him.
I couldn't believe this was happening. How could Zac have feelings for me? We were supposd to be best friends and nothing was supposed to come between us. Now his feeling had come between us. There was no way we could go back to the way things had been.
