A Bundle of Surprises
Devon groaned softly as she rolled over in bed, hoping that she could stay asleep for just a few more minutes. It had been so long since she had been able to sleep past seven a.m., and she wanted to milk this getaway for everything it was worth. She smiled in her dozing state, remembering the way Chris had surprised her the day before. He was always doing stuff like that for her, and as much as she complained about hating surprises, she loved every second of it. She could hear Chris talking on his cellular phone in the sitting room and sighed contentedly. This was something she could get used to. Waking up to Chris's voice every morning. Knowing that he would be there when her eyes opened. Devon opened her eyes and glanced at her watch sitting on the bedside table. It was nearly eleven a.m.
"Christ, well, there goes half the day." she mumbled to herself as she slowly sat up and stretched languorously, almost looking like a feline rising from a catnap. She hurriedly got dressed and walked into the sitting room with a smile. Chris looked up at her, ear glued to his phone, and smiled. Devon plopped down on the couch next to him and pressed a kiss to his throat as he continued to talk. A few minutes later, he hung up the phone and turned to her.
"How did you sleep last night, sweetheart?" he inquired softly, taking her into his arms.
"Wonderfully. Why didn't you wake me earlier?" Devon replied with a smile.
"Because you looked too angelic and I didn't want to disturb you. Besides, this is your vacation." Chris shrugged and kissed the top of her head. "You hungry?"
"Yeah, famished." she nodded vigorously. Chris laughed, climbing to his feet, pulling her with him.
"Henry and Grace should have lunch ready soon." he smiled as they headed downstairs.
"Hold on a minute. I know that look. What are you up to, Chris?" Devon inquired raising an eyebrow as she yanked on his hand.
"Nothing, you paranoid or something?" he laughed giving her a playful shove.
"No, I just know that look and it always means you're up to something. And generally speaking, I'm not going to like it." she teased, pushing him back.
"Oh, so you didn't like the flowers, or this bed and breakfast or any of the other things I've planned for us." Chris nodded, a knowing smile on his face.
"That wasn't fighting fair. You knew my weakness and used it to your advantage." Devon pouted as he jogged down the staircase.
"I know. Ain't I a stinker?" he laughed loudly, Devon following close behind him.
"You're a stinker all right." she grumbled, trying to hide a smile but not succeeding.
"Morning, kids." Grace smiled to the pair from the lounge, where she was sitting. In her hands she had a set of knitting needles and was working furiously on what looked like a sweater made of a brilliant green color.
"Morning, Grace, how are you?" Devon inquired with a smile.
"Just fine, dear. How did you sleep?" Grace laughed, shooing Chris away after he delivered a kiss to her cheek.
"Like a baby. You have a very beautiful house." Devon laughed giving Chris a playful punch in the arm.
"Did you see what she just did to me?" Chris demanded turning to Grace yet again.
"Yes I did." Grace nodded with amusement. "But, you probably did something to deserve it, so I wouldn't worry overmuch about it."
Chris's jaw hit the floor and the two women burst out laughing. "I should've remembered that women stick together." he sighed shaking his head.
"When will you ever learn?" Devon questioned rolling her eyes heavenward.
"Probably never." Chris laughed as he walked from the room, pulling Devon with him. She waved to Grace as she was pulled out of the room. Grace laughed shaking her head with amusement. She missed having younger people around. They filled the house with such joy and laughter.
"Chris, what are you doing?" Devon demanded as he brought her into the kitchen.
"Nothing." he shook his head with a rueful grin. Devon rolled her eyes and folded her arms across her chest, refusing to move another inch without an explanation.
"I don't believe you." she shook her head.
"Okay, if you must know what's going on, I made arrangements to have the White's granddaughter fly out here with their daughter. They're going to be landing sometime this afternoon, and we have to go pick them up." Chris sighed with a shake of his head.
"Chris, that is the sweetest thing you've ever done." Devon smiled, touching his cheek gently.
"Yeah, well, don't let it get out." he laughed placing a kiss on her forehead before turning to the back door. "We have to come up with something we could do in town."
"We can say we're going sight seeing. Duh. I mean, we are on vacation." Devon reminded teasingly. Chris slapped his forehead and shook his head.
"Now why didn't I think of that?" he laughed.
"Cause you're male."
