Shattered

A Shot in the Dark

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~Prologue~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Would you please calm down, little bird? It's nothing bad. Believe me." JC sighed as he watched his girlfriend of a year and a half pace the small recreation room on the tour bus. The television flickered behind her, casting the dark room into an eerie glow.

"JC, when you say we need to talk, it's generally something bad. Last time you said that, we broke up for three months." Mike tossed her hands into the air then turned to gaze at the movie they had been watching, which was now muted. JC climbed to his feet and walked over to her.

"Nothing's wrong, I promise." he whispered to her as he stood behind her.

"Then what's going on, JC?" she demanded softly, not sure what to expect from him. They had troubles, every couple did. They had even broken up a couple of times, but always realized it was a mistake before too long. The two were made for each other, everyone else could see that, but they had trouble seeing that for themselves.

"I'm trying to build up the courage, give me a second." JC sighed and took a deep breath. He actually looked nervous.

"It is something bad." Mike sighed, more to herself than him. She turned and walked toward the doorway, which led to the bunk area.

"Marry me." he called out to her. Mike stopped dead in her tracks, her heart pounding wildly in her chest as she turned to face him again.

"What?" she whispered the question, not sure if she had heard correctly. JC walked over to her with a smile.

"I said, marry me." he repeated softly.

"Are you serious?" Mike's eyes darted up to his face.

"Yes." he nodded, slipping his arms around her.

"Oh my God, you are." she whispered, unexplainable tears filling her eyes. She had never been the emotional type who would cry at the drop of a hat. In fact, she had only cried six times in her entire twenty-one years. Her mind whirled with the possibilities of marriage to JC.

"What do you say?" JC questioned softly, looking down at her shocked face with fear and elation combined.

"JC, oh my God." Mike stated, more than a little nervous. JC laughed softly.

"You weren't expecting that question, were you?"

She shook her head, mutely, not knowing what to say. Thinking of all the reasons why she shouldn't marry him, but not a single one popped into her mind. Not a single warning bell made itself known to her.

"Yes." Mike stated suddenly. JC peered down at her, searching her face for any kind of emotion. All he saw was love and happiness. He heaved a silent sigh of relief as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box. He opened it, then handed the box to her. Her gaze darted downward and a small gasp escaped her lips. The ring was beautiful, silver with a tear shaped diamond that looked a little too big for her tiny hand. Dolphins were carved around the semi-thick band.

"JC, it's beautiful." she whispered as he took the ring, then her left hand and slipped the ring onto her ring finger. She gazed down at her hand, still unbelieving on what just happened. She was going to marry JC Chasez of the music group 'N Sync. Her best friend for years, her confidante, her soul's mate.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The hotel lobby was crowded, which caused Justin Timberlake to groan loudly. He had hoped the hotel would be empty, it was nearly two a.m. for God's sake. JC smiled tiredly at the fans that had camped out on couches and chairs, waiting for them to arrive. Another town, another state, and another gig. As much as JC loved touring and singing with the men who had become his brothers, he missed his home in Orlando.

"Just think, Justin, all these girls adore you." Chris told the youngest member of the group with a wicked gleam in his eye.

"Oh yeah, just what I've always dreamt of. A ten year old proposing marriage to me while her mother glares daggers at my back and her friends plot to kidnap me. Sounds like one tough evening to beat, but I think I'd rather sleep, thank you very much." Justin snorted shaking his head ruefully.

"Justin, be nice. These girls love you." JC laughed as he smiled to a girl who had stared at him since the second he walked through the front door.

"Love," Justin scoffed. "Most of these girls are too young to know what love really is. They're infatuated."

"Looks like someone used just a tad too much dye this morning." Lance mumbled as a girl approached him with a camera.

"Shut your face, PooFoo." Justin laughed with a good natured grin. Lance shook his head with a smile.

"All right ya Mickey Mouse Club reject." he countered under his breath. Joe stifled a laugh as he posed for a picture with a girl who looked to be in her late teens. JC's eyes scanned the room, tallying how many people were there to get autographs and pictures. He quickly counted fifteen and gave an imperceptive sigh of relief. They wouldn't be held up too long. It wasn't that he didn't enjoy talking with their fans, he just really wanted to get to his room and relax for a while.

"Excuse me, JC?" a female voice questioned from behind him. JC turned and smiled at the girl who had stared at him, who looked extremely nervous being this close to him.

"Hey, how are ya tonight?" he questioned politely.

"I'm doing great, now that you're here." she smiled prettily at him. JC silently groaned to himself.

"Well, thank you." he smiled as Joe walked over to the two. The girl glared at Joe for a moment before turning her smile back to JC.

"Could I have your autograph?" she questioned suddenly.

"Sure, what's your name?" JC agreed taking the black permanent marker she held.

"Tanya." she breathed softly, baring a shoulder for him to sign. JC glanced over at Joe, who rolled his eyes sympathetically. He quickly signed his name over her flesh then capped the marker.

"There you go, have a good night." JC smiled as he turned to Joe.

"Where are you going?" Tanya pouted, giving him her best puppy dog eyes.

"To go get some sleep. We have an early morning." JC answered, his patience wearing thin.

"JC, Michaela's on the phone!" Chris called from the front desk, where he had signed everyone in. A smile transformed JC's face.

"Have fun, dear." he told Tanya before walking to the front desk. He picked up the phone and held it to his ear for a moment.

"How'd you know to call the front desk?"

"Gee, lets think about this one for a moment, shall we? You just got into a new city, where your concert sold out in less than three seconds. I would say it's safe to assume there were a few fans waiting for you at the hotel."

"I knew you were a smart cookie."

"Am I chocolate chip?"

"If you want to be. God, I miss you like crazy."

"Mmmm, I miss you, too. Planning this damn wedding is a pain all by my onsies."

"I can imagine, but I'll be home for a few days at the end of the month. We can go over everything when I get back."

"Nope, when you get back, we are going to hibernate for at least five hours and do nothing but talk to each other about things other than my classes, your tour, and the wedding."

"Okay, it's a deal. Speaking of classes, how was your exam last night?"

"It sucked, but then I knew it would, so I'm not surprised."

"You think you did well?"

"No, I think I failed, but that's all right because the Professor's a dink."

"Only you, Mike. I gotta go sweetie, the guys are giving me goo goo eyes and crap. I'll call you later on today."

"I'll be roaming around, so you might as well call the cell phone."

"Okay, I think I can handle that."

"Are you sure? We all know French people do things backwards sometimes."

"Very funny, you Scottish twit."

"Hey, I'm Italian and German too, pal."

"Oh right, I keep forgetting that you have mafia ties, a drinking problem, and a strong desire to be the best."

"That's it. Maybe you should be the Psychologist. It would save me a whole lot of grief."

"Nah, I'll let you deal with it."

"Thanks, you're my hero. That is if you didn't drop me all the time."

"I don't drop you. Man, are you punchy. I think it's time you went to bed."

"Not sleepy. Besides, I have to study. 'Nother exam tomorrow. Did I mention that I love college. It's so cool!"

"That's just a bit too much sarcasm, babe."

"Oh, sorry. I'll let you go now."

"All right. I'll call you later."

"I know, you better."

"I will. I love you."

"I love you, too, JC."

"Bye." JC smiled shaking his head as he hung up the phone. He smiled his thanks to the person sitting behind the front desk then turned to the rest of the guys. JC walked over to them while they all made jokes about him being whipped and smiled ruefully, never noticing a pair of ice blue eyes watching their every move from the shadows of a corner.

"At least I have the love of a good woman, which is more than I can say for you, Justin." JC laughed giving the young man a playful shove as they headed to the elevators.

"Hey, as soon as I convince Carli to go out with me, I'll have the love of a good woman, too." Justin exclaimed as the elevator doors slid shut.

"She still hasn't changed her mind?" Chris questioned, raising an eyebrow. Justin shook his head with a sigh.

"She says that I'm too pretty boy for her, and dating me would be like dating a ken doll." he grinned, which made everyone chuckle. They all made their way to their rooms to catch some down time before hitting their beds to get some sleep.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The young woman stormed into her room and immediately hit the play button on her five disk changer, which permanently housed all her 'N Sync CDs. 'Tearing Up My Heart' came over the speakers at a decibel too loud for four a.m., but she didn't care. She was too angry with them to care at the moment. He hadn't noticed her, and she had been looking right at him.

She flopped on her bed, her mind reeling from all the angry words she thought. She knew they all dated, but this was ridiculous. Chris was dating Devon Summers, Joe was dating Ashley King, and JC was dating Michaela Costeo. Justin and Lance were the only single ones to date, but they were just too young for her liking. She sat up abruptly and jumped to her feet. Something had to be done. She had to do something to get his attention and get him to notice her. She would be a much more suitable girlfriend for him than that other person he was currently dating. His girlfriend didn't even tour with him, for God's sake.

She threw her hands up into the air with frustration as she paced the small confines of her room. They would be appearing on a talk show in the morning. She had all ready set her VCR to record the show, as she had done for every single one of their appearances on television. A small devilish smile crossed her face as she thought about her man. He was so handsome, and his voice made her think so many different things. He would love her as soon as he saw her, she knew that for a fact. What man could resist her? None. Most men she knew were nothing like him. He was sweet, charming and funny. The men she knew treated her like dog food, and she knew that was something he would never do.

She had been to twelve 'N Sync concerts, tomorrow night being her thirteenth and each time she had gotten front row tickets, just to be near him. She shivered slightly and pulled out a replica jacket, one like he wore on the Jay Leno show. She slipped her arms through the sleeves and sat down on her bed again. Soon her mother would wake up long enough to yell at her to turn the music down, but until then, she sat back and closed her eyes, listening to the words he was singing to her and only her. The songs that he sung had been written for her, from him, she knew that. He just didn't know it yet. She sang with the words, her mind drifting to him.

He was absolutely perfect. Dark hair, light eyes, tall, muscular. What more could a girl ask for in a man? He was funny, charming, down to earth, and his smile made her knees go weak every single time. She giggled to herself when she thought what his reaction would be when he would first see her.

Of course she would be in the front row, and he would scan the crowd while he sang. Suddenly he would turn and look directly at her. He would kneel over and take her hand while he sang his lines to her, his eyes never breaking contact with hers. He would give her one of his smiles and somehow slip her a note in between songs saying he had to meet her. She would go back stage, because also like the front row tickets, she always had them. She would walk passed the little girls desperate for his attention, and lean back against the wall. He would notice her while signing an autograph and stop suddenly so he could walk over to talk to her. He would tell her all about how he had to meet her, because she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. She would laugh prettily, resting her hand on his chest. Suddenly, they would be kissing, then everyone would know they were together. Not him and that bitch.

Anger soared in her again when she thought of his girlfriend. That would have to change, and soon. She couldn't take much more of this.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The television studio was crowded and filled with dozens of excited teenage fans waiting for 'N Sync to hit the stage. Their squeals and screams could be heard backstage in the dressing room that had been allotted to the group. The hair and make-up people were getting each of the members ready to go on stage. All wore black outfits, matching to the others in some way.

"I wish they would stop screaming. It doesn't make this go any faster." Lance mumbled as the make-up artist touched up his face. Justin laughed from the hair stylist's chair. They were the last two; JC, Joe and Chris were all ready to go. Finally, Lance and Justin were ready. The five men filed from the room and took their places in front of the band on a darkened section of the stage.

"All right ladies, this is the moment you've all been waiting for. Please help me welcome 'N Sync!" the host yelled into her microphone. The crowd exploded into deafening screams as the lights were raised. The opening bars of 'God Must Have Spent A Little More Time On You' filled the air, which made the screams intensify. Each of the men smiled at the audience as Justin sang the first line.

When the song ended, the guys walked over to the chairs set up for the interview part of the segment and gave the host a hug or a handshake before taking a seat. The crowd continued to scream, causing the men to laugh because they couldn't say anything, fore they wouldn't be heard over the squeals.

"I know you guys need no introduction, but why don't you introduce yourself anyway for those people who have been living in a time warp." the host, Linda, smiled.

"I'm Chris Kirkpatrick and I'm twenty-seven."

"I'm Lance Bass and I'm nineteen."

"JC Chasez, twenty-two."

"Joe Fatone, from New York, twenty-one."

"Justin Timberlake, and I'm seventeen."

"How's the tour been so far?" Linda questioned walking over to the members of the audience.

"Great." the five men chorused.

"We have a question from the audience, Melody is it?" Linda looked down at her cards briefly.

"Yes." a young woman smiled with a nod. "I was just wondering, do you guys fight?"

"Of course we do, but mostly over stupid things." Justin laughed with a nod.

"What kinds of things?" Melody inquired with a huge smile.

"Just stupid things. Like while we're on tour, if someone throws their stuff on your bunk. Sometimes clothes or things like that." JC shrugged.

"Do you ever fight over girls?" Linda questioned turning to face the five men with a smile.

"No!" they all laughed shaking their heads.

"We try not to, anyway." Joe smiled.

"Jess, come on over here and ask your question." Linda called out. A beautiful young woman stood up and walked over to the host.

"Would any of you ever consider dating a fan?" Jess inquired, raising an eyebrow.

"I don't see why not." Justin smiled. Linda walked over to the next person with a smile, beginning to look a bit harried.

"Hi, I'm Abby. First, I just wanted to say, I love your music. My question is, do any of you have girlfriends and if so, what are their names and what do they do?" she inquired with a devilish smile.

"I'm single." Justin started with a laugh.

"I do have a girlfriend. Her name is Ashley and she's in pre-med." Joe smiled.

"I have a girlfriend, Devon and she owns a record store in Orlando." Chris nodded, looking none too thrilled about sharing his personal life on national television.

"Like Justin, I'm single." Lance laughed.

"Yeah, Lance is just looking for someone to talk to." Justin smiled impishly and everyone laughed.

"I have a lady. She's studying Psychology in Florida and her name is Michaela." JC nodded.

"Yeah, but you didn't tell them the best part." Chris admonished playfully shoving JC off his stool.

"Oh, right. Mike and I are getting married." JC laughed, taking his seat again as a few members in the audience exclaimed their protests.

"Congratulations. Have you set a date yet?" Linda inquired as she stepped toward the stage again.

"Thank you and no, not yet. Mike's been working on everything while we're on tour. I'll go over everything with her when I get back." JC answered with a smile.

"Yeah, you should see her. She's going nuts." Chris laughed.

"And this is something new?" Lance snorted.

"No kidding, when is Mike never nuts?" Justin demanded teasingly.

"I think we have a phone call now, guys." Linda laughed. "Can you hear us?"

"Loud and clear." a female voice laughed. "Justin, Chris and Lance, I just have one thing to say to you three. Revenge is sweet sayeth the Lord, and I love doing the Lord's work."

"Mike, we were only playin wit ya." Justin laughed.

"Yeah right. Anyway, I heard what y'all said about me, and I'm not nuts. The people I study are, but I am not."

"So tell us, Mike. Is it hard being a girlfriend of a man so popular with the music world and the ladies?" Linda inquired.

"Yeah, it gets hard sometimes but there's a certain level of respect and tolerance each of the ladies have. We all go through times where we miss them and want them here with us, but ultimately, we all understand. Besides, we have our own lives. As much as we love our men, our lives don't revolve around them."

"This is true." Joe nodded.

"Well thank you for calling in Mike."

"Yup, no problem. See you guys later." Mike laughed then the line went dead. JC shook his head with a smile.

"When will you guys put out another album?" another fan inquired as Linda sat down in an empty chair.

"We're sorta in the middle of recording a Christmas album. If everything goes as planned, it should hit the stores sometime in November." Joe answered.

"What's going to be on the album?" Linda inquired, raising an eyebrow with a smile.

"Some new stuff, some old stuff. You know, the usual." Lance laughed.

"You're not going to give us any more than that?!" Linda exclaimed as she climbed to her feet yet again.

"Nope, we can't." Justin shook his head.

"Yeah, it's a top secret mission." JC nodded in agreement.

"We could tell you, but then we'd have to kill you." Chris laughed.

"All right, we're out of time. Tune in tomorrow we'll have the cast of 'Friends' here to give advice about friendship and living with prospective partners." Linda smiled into her microphone.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

She stormed into her room, furious enough for murder. She screamed in anguish as she tore down every single 'N Sync poster she had taped onto her walls. She then proceeded to tear those posters to slivers of nothing. How dare he say that she's his girlfriend and humiliate me on national television?! He pities her. She's a damn charity case!

She grabbed each of her 'N Sync CDs and threw them against the wall. They shattered into a thousand tiny pieces that littered the floor. She stuffed everything into her metal waste basket. The replica clothing she had spent so much money on, the shredded posters, the CDs cases, all of her 'N Sync merchandise. She doused everything in lighter fluid.

"You are mine, not hers!" she cried, hot tears spilling down her cheeks as she grabbed a book of matches from her purse. She took out a match, struck it, then dropped it onto the saturated material in the waste basket. She watched the items catch the flame and glow hotly with fire for a few moments before she grabbed her purse and walked out, never looking back.

She climbed into her old, beat up car and started the engine and started driving south. She had to do something. She couldn't sit idly by and let him humiliate her like this. After her friends saw the interview, she would become the laughing stock because she had told them she had been dating him for years.

Something had to be done. This one couldn't slide like all the others.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~Two Days Later~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Mike sighed pacing her dorm room, waiting for Ashley to finished getting dressed. The two were meeting Devon and Rachel at a restaurant for an early dinner. She was becoming stressed to the point of breaking. She knew that the wedding wasn't going to happen within the next year, but her mother had already started in on her. Mrs. Costeo wanted to take over the planning of the wedding, which was driving Mike absolutely insane. The phone rang, bringing a weary smile to her lips.

"Hello?"

"So, how badly do you want to see me?"

"Gee, I dunno. At the moment I wish you had never proposed to me."

"What'd your mother do now?"

"She wants the maid of honor to wear sunshine yellow and the bride's maids to wear an eggshell yellow. You tell me."

"What color were you hoping for?"

"I don't know. Royal blue? Emerald green? Something dark."

"Why not both?"

"Why are we even worrying about this right now. We haven't even decided on a date yet."

"How about April 23?"

"Too predictable."

"New Years Eve?"

"More of a reason for people to get drunk. Nope."

"You're just being difficult."

"I know, why do you put up with me?"

"Because I think it would be easier to give up breathing than to give you up."

"Stop that! You'll make me cry."

"But it's true."

"I want to see you."

"We're a three hour car ride away."

"I'm on my way." Mike smiled then hung up. "Ash! There's been a change of plans!" she called to her roommate.

"Yeah? What's that?" Ashley inquired as she walked from the bathroom.

"Road trip." Mike replied grabbing some clothing and stuffing them into a bag.

"Missed him too much to stay away, huh?" she smiled, tossing clothing into her own bag.

"Something like that. Am I getting any complaints?" Mike raised an eyebrow.

"No." Ashley laughed picking up the phone. While Mike walked out to her car, Ashley called Rachel and Devon to tell them what was going on and to pack something so they could join them. They were going on a road trip. A few minutes later, Ashley bolted out of the dorm and climbed into the passenger's seat. They took off with the radio cranked at a high volume. Before they hit the highway, they picked up Devon and Rachel.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

JC walked into Joe and Lance's hotel room, a faint smile tugging on his lips. Justin and Chris were sprawled out on the floor, playing NFL Extreme; Lance and Joe were lounging on the beds, flipping through different magazines. Lance snorted suddenly and coughed to cover his laughter.

"What now?" Justin demanded distractedly.

"Nothing. I just found something funny." Lance shrugged, humor filling his voice.

"Are you reading those teen magazines again?" JC questioned with a laugh.

"I can't help it. I'm addicted to BOP, Sixteen, Tutti Frutti, SuperTeen and Big BOP." Lance sighed, hanging his head dejectedly.

"And the scary thing is, he remembers all of those names." Chris shook his head.

"What the hell for?" Joe inquired with amusement, trying to keep a straight face.

"For all the news and pin-ups of those sexy songsters 'N Sync. Be careful girls, heartthrob JC is engaged. And Joe and Chris, those two delicious babes have steady girlfriends." Lance answered in a grave voice, much to the amusement of the others.

"Noooo! Why?!" Chris suddenly yelled in a tortured voice. "JC was my dreamboat!"

JC laughed shaking his head as he leaned back against the wall. He knew this would be interesting if not funny as all hell.

"I love Joey. Why is JC your dreamboat?" Justin inquired in a high pitched voice.

"Ooohhhhhh. His arms. His body. That voice and those lips." Chris sighed, gazing dreamily off into space. A slight blush colored JC's face as he shook his head.

"Yes, but Joe has that gorgeous goatee." Justin smiled leaning back against the bed. The two let out ear piercing squeals when Lance held up a poster of Joe and JC. Everyone dissolved into laughter.

JC flopped down on the foot of Joe's bed and snatched one of the magazines from Lance so he could flip through the mindless reading material. He chuckled to himself as he read an article about his sleeping habits.

"Why are you so chipper this evening?" Justin snorted, glancing at JC as the video game resumed.

"My lady loves me enough to drive here to see me tonight." JC mumbled, a mock look of concentration on his face.

"Is she driving alone?" Joe questioned hopefully, an eyebrow raised.

"You know, I forgot to ask." JC grinned, his eyes never leaving the magazine. Joe groaned throwing a pillow at JC. A loud knock sounded at the door, silencing everyone. Lance climbed to his feet and opened the door, partially, to see who it was.

"You guys ready to shoot your video?" one of the group's body guards questioned.

"Is that all you want? What about my needs? You never spend any time with me anymore! When was the last time you took me out to dinner, or brought me flowers?!" Lance railed, stomping a foot on the floor. The body guard shook his head, eyes rolling heavenward as everyone filed from the room.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

She pulled into the parking lot of the hotel and climbed out of her car. It wasn't very big, which surprised her with all the fame and money 'N Sync had. She had waited in her car to make sure they had left, her temper rising by the second. She made her way inside and walked down one of the numerous hallways, breaking into each room until she had come across his. She quickly closed and locked the door behind her. A dreamy smile crossed her face. This is where he would rest his head tonight, she thought to herself as she fingered one of the pillows on the bed furthest from the door.

She walked over to the two duffle bags sitting in the corner and knelt down in front of them. She knew they would be gone for hours, doing whatever it is that famous people did. She unzipped one of the bags and rummaged around for a few minutes, only to groan in disgust when she found out it was Justin's bag. She tossed the bag aside and turned to the other, unzipping it carefully. She pulled out each item, stroking it as if it were silk.

She pulled out a rumpled shirt and held it to her face, closing her eyes and inhaling deeply. He smelled so good. Spicy, almost like the ocean. She lovingly set the shirt aside and pulled out the next item. It was a moderately sized photo album. She sat back, leaning against the bed, resting the photo album in her lap as she opened to the first page. Her eyes narrowed to angry slits. The first picture was of him and her. Her long auburn hair was tossing wildly in the wind and his arms were wrapped loosely around her neck from behind. They were, no doubt, on the beach and they both looked incredibly happy.

She resisted the temptation of tearing the picture to shreds. Instead, she flipped the page to the next picture. The next one was a black and white picture of just his girlfriend. She scrutinized the picture, wondering what he saw in the dog. She wondered what it was about the woman. She flipped to the next picture. The damn woman was in this one, too. In this picture, the woman was standing nose to nose with Chris and both looked angry.

She scoffed at the picture. She would never get angry with any of the group members, after all, they were best friends. Almost brothers. She would be totally docile and agreeable, just the kind of girlfriend he needed and would cherish. She wouldn't crowd him while he was recording or try to tear him away from his work. He wouldn't have to spend so much money on his phone bill because she would tour with them constantly.

She quickly flipped through the rest of the photo album, taking the best picture of the couple and stuffing it into her pocket for future reference. She returned everything to the bag, then quietly snuck out of the room. Her lips pulled into a gruesome smile. He wore Obsession for men, her favorite scent.

She glanced down at her watch as she started the car and balked in fear. It was nearly midnight. She would have to go shopping in the morning for some much needed items. She gripped the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles turned white as she drove back to her own hotel to sit and stew about everything for the rest of the night.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Mike pulled into the parking lot of the sound stage where 'N Sync was filming their new video and everyone piled out of the car, happy to be able to move about and stretch their muscles. Mike sighed as she rubbed the back of her neck, tiredly. It had been a long day, and an equally long drive, though it had only been about four hours, considering the girls had stopped to grab something for dinner on the way.

"When do we have to go back?" Rachel questioned with a yawn. It was late Friday night, and everyone was ready for a break after a long week of classes.

"Well, I can do my work for the fan club through phones and my computer, plus I don't have class until eight Wednesday morning." Mike shrugged as she headed to the side door of the building. She rapped on the door and smiled at the security guard who opened the door.

"Hey Gus!" Mike stated cheerfully to the man who had worked with 'N Sync for two years. Gus grunted as he let the four ladies in. Devon, Ashley and Rachel all headed in the direction where most of the noise was coming from.

"I'm impressed, Gus. You've arrived to the next plateau. Neanderthal guttural grunts is the next step you've accomplished. You should be proud of yourself." Mike smiled impishly. Gus tossed her a silent sideways glance, shaking his head. She burst out laughing and turned to follow her friends. She walked around the corner and stopped short, momentarily shocked by what she saw before her. There stood 'N Sync wearing replica Spice Girls outfits.

"Ohmigod! Ginger came back!" Mike exclaimed loudly.

"I was just thinking the same thing." Devon mumbled, eyeing Chris in his wig and green spandex thing.

"You want to know what the truly sad thing is?" Mike questioned shaking her head.

"What's that?" Rachel replied, obviously still in shock.

"They look better in those outfits than I ever could. Spandex is a cruel invention that only a man could have come up with." Mike groaned, a look of distress on her face. She shook her head and walked over to the group, who was very involved in an animated conversation with the director of the video. Each man wore a wig of some sort, and something short out of spandex.

"Excuse me, ladies?" Mike tried to stifle her laughter. Five heads snapped around, fake hair swirling around their faces, and she nearly lost it. "I'm looking for my fiancé. You wouldn't happen to know where I could find him, would you?"

"Hi baby." JC smiled walking over to her.

"Um, yeah, hi. Have you been hiding a secret life from me?" she inquired taking a step backward with every forward step he took.

"He's a call girl!" Justin shouted with a laugh.

"No, he's taking the place of Kate in 'Charlie's Angels'!" Chris countered loudly.

"Oh, yeah. This coming from Tori Spelling and Shannon Doherty." JC snorted, slowly backing Mike up against the wall. Mike laughed shaking her head as JC trapped her by placing his hands on either side of her. He gave her a sexy grin, his lips a bright red color from the lipstick he was wearing, before he smothered her laughter by placing a kiss on her lips. Mike stood motionless for a moment before snaking her arms around his neck, leaning into him. JC's arms banded around her waist and pulled her closer.

"Anyone have any popcorn? Titanic has nothing on this." Devon questioned loudly as Chris walked over to her.

"I'm glad you came." he whispered in her ear as he pulled her into a hug.

"Me, too. I wouldn't have missed this for the world." Devon laughed, wrapping her arms around him.

"When are you guys getting out of those costumes?" Ashley inquired, folding her arms across her chest, refusing to let Joe near her while he looked better than she did.

"In a few minutes, God willing." Lance replied, making a face as he yanking downward on the hem of his mini-dress. "How do y'all put up with this torture?"

"Because men, as an entire species, love to see women in skimpy clothing. Hence the reason why the dress was invented. Not to mention, the high heel shoe and the bra were invented by men. So live it up boys, cause this is just a drop in the bucket as far as I'm concerned." Rachel laughed shaking her head with amusement.

"I never thought I'd say this, but, JC, you got lipstick all over me." Mike sighed, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. JC laughed as he disappeared into the dressing room.

"Hey Mike!" Justin called out loudly.

"Yeah?"

"Will you make those desert thingies for us?" he questioned from the dressing room.

"Yeah, will you?" Joe and Chris chorused with smiles.

"All right, if you guys fork over the cash to help pay for all the ingredients, I'll make them." Mike laughed, taking a seat on a nearby stool. They all disappeared into the dressing room. Mike leaned back against the wall and closed her eyes, a small smile on her face. She was nearly asleep when she felt a fingertip trace her jaw line delicately. Mike opened her eyes and saw JC standing over her in his normal clothes, hair still damp from the shower.

"Hi." he stated softly with a smile.

"Hi." she replied just as softly, returning the smile as she got to her feet. He took her hands and brought them to the back of his neck, then wrapped his arms around her waist. Mike smiled, resting her head on JC's shoulder as they swayed in the silence.

"It has to be a crime to smell as good as you do." she mumbled into his shoulder.

"What about you?" JC countered with a laugh.

"What about me?" she questioned, looking up at him with an impish smile.

"That raspberry body spray stuff. I like it." he laughed softly.

"You do, huh? I'll pick some up for you, though I don't know if raspberry's your scent." Mike replied teasingly and laughed when he brought her down into an exaggerated dip.

"Uh, are you guys done? We all want to get outta here." Justin called from where he and the others stood, waiting for them.

Mike sighed, resting her forehead on JC's shoulder. "The natives are getting restless."

"I know. Lets go before they start taking prisoners." JC countered, reluctantly releasing her.

She made her way quickly and efficiently around the store. The basket hanging from her hand held two boxes of auburn hair dye and a pair of soft green contact lenses. She was now looking for conservative yet comfortable clothing. She finally decided on a pair of loose fitting black jeans and a lilac turtleneck sweater before walking up to the cash register.

When she was done, she drove to her hotel room to make the alterations on her appearance. Three hours later, she stood in front of the mirror, holding the stolen picture in her hand. There were still some differences. Her face was a bit chubbier, her cheek bones not as high and prominent, her lips not as full, her eyes not so catlike, but she could pass as his current girlfriend.

She gave her reflection a purely evil smile as she struck a match. She held the flame to the corner of the picture and waited until the flame caught before dropping it into the sink. She walked over to her bed and sat down with a giggle. She would bide her time, waiting patiently for the right moment to put her plan into action. It would be only days now. Soon she would have everything her heart desired, and he would have her.

She had known his girlfriend would be showing up that night, which made her plan all that easier to carry out. Something tragic would happen, but she had asked for it by taking him away from her. Everyone knows that when you play with fire, you always got burned. She was pure fire, and she was going to destroy that smiling woman's life.

Justin, Joe, Ashley, Devon, Chris, Rachel, Lance, JC and Mike were all sprawled out in Chris and Joe's room watching a movie while Mike made desert pizzas in the minuscule kitchenette. The room was progressively becoming hotter and hotter while the stove top burners cooked the gooy concoctions that each person had requested. A loud explosion emitted from the speakers of the television, then a female scream of fear. Mike shook her head with a smile as she set the last two desert pizzas on the last two plastic plates, then she headed to the other room. She handed JC his fudge and strawberry pizza (mind you it was a pizza that had no tomato sauce and was fried like fried bread) and sat down beside him to munch on her own creation.

JC and Justin leaned over to look at her pizza and sighed loudly.

"Yours looks better than ours." Justin complained teasingly. Mike tossed a glare in the young man's general direction as she tore off a piece and slapped it onto his plate. "Thank you." he smiled. She glanced over at JC, who was pouting and giving her the puppy dog eyes she could never quite resist. She sighed and slapped the rest of her desert pizza onto JC's plate.

"Now, hold up. What's Mike supposed to eat now?" Lance inquired raising an eyebrow as she climbed to her feet.

"Don't worry about me. I'll grab something from the vending machine down the hall. Be right back." Mike smiled tiredly as she opened the door. She walked down the hall rummaging for change in her jeans pockets. She stood in front of the machine and debated on whether she should get a kitkat bar or a milkyway bar, then decided on neither and got a brownie. She then turned around and almost bumped into a girl who looked peeved at her.

"Excuse me. I didn't see you." Mike sighed softly as she rubbed the back of her neck with her free hand. The girl didn't say anything, she only glared daggers at her. The hair on the back of Mike's neck prickled up as she headed back down the hallway. Something was strange about that girl. Mike shook her head and pushed open the door to Chris's room and walked inside.

"So, we have the day off tomorrow. What does everyone want to do?" Joe inquired as Ashley snuggled into his arms with a smile.

"Go horseback riding." Lance smiled.

"Sleep." Justin mumbled through a mouthful of his pizza.

"I'm with Lance. Horseback riding sounds like fun." JC smiled as he pulled Mike into his arms. "What do you say?" he questioned looking down at her.

"Horseback riding sounds good to me." Mike nodded as she opened her brownie.

"Me too." Chris nodded distractedly.

"Horseback riding it is then." Lance nodded, settling back against the headboard.
