Backstreet Boys Get Real!

(16, November 1997)

Is there any better way to spend the day than chatting with Kevin, Howie, Brian, A.J., and Nick--better known as the Backstreet Boys? We think not! The Boys are busting out all over with their smash C.D., but they still found the time to sit down, kick back, and answer every question we threw at them--and their answers may just surprise you!

You've really hit hard here in the United States. Is this success like a fantasy come true for you?
This whole thing is like a dream come true. I"m just so happy to have ajob I love to do. I love to sing. I've dreamed of this--when I was little, I dreamed of singing in front of thousands of people and I'm getting to do it. And the fact that we're doing it in the United States, where all my friends and family can see first hand is very exciting.

What does this album mean to you?
It's really the best music we've done for the past two years. It's a mix of nice easygoing music, and some slamming dance songs, and some very pretty ballads.

Do you also have a good time shooting videos?
We're all very big hams. We all like attention. When you get in front of a camera, it's almost like being on stage.

Do you think you'd ever like to be in a movie?
I'd love to, either on television or in a film.

What kind of role would you like to play?
Anything! Villain, comedy, character parts, whatever. I'm really interested in that!

What would be your dream date?
Some dinner. Good conversatioin. If the vibe is there, maybe a romantic walk in the park or on a beach. Something like that.

So, are you excited to finally be taking over America?
Definitely, but I'm really glad things happened the way they did for us. We've had a chance to perfect our craft and we really learned a lot.

So now you're touring the U.S....
Yeah. And it's really great!

When you travel together, do you share a hotel room?
Well, we're finally making some money, so we can afford our own rooms. Which is good. We're with each other 24/7 so we sometimes need to take a little time for ourselves.

Kevin said he'd be interested in a film career--would you?
Oh yeah! For me, it's like I'm always acting--acting and singing is like one for me. It was like, I was always going out on acting or singing auditions. It's all one--it's all entertainment.

What kind of role would you be interested in playing?
I don't know. My favorite actor is Tom Hanks because I realy lke the way he switches from drama to comedy, and that's waht I'd like to be able to do.

How would you like your audience to perceive you?
We want to be perceived as five guys who love to sing, love to perform, who love to share the gift of music with the whole world.

Are you more nervous about performing in the U.S.?
Nervous and excited. I'm very happy but very nervous because you never know what the future holds.

When you joined the group, did you think it would go this far?
I had no expectations because I really had no idea what I was getting myself into!

What would you have done if you hadn't become a Backstreet Boy?
I always played basketball in high school, so I thought maybe I'd pursue that. Basketball and singing were both ver important to me growing up.

Most importantly--do you have a girlfriend?
We meet girls everywhere but it's hard to spend the time to really get to someone. I had someone at home but...it was a mutual thing. It's just tough because I'm never home.

Is there anything about the album that might surprise people?
I think the versatility--going from one song, which is a dance song, to a ballad, and then to an R&B song. We cover every ground--we want everyone to love our music. That's what it's all about.

You've done acting as well as singing and dancing--would you ever consider an acting career?
Actually, I wanted it to be my first career. I wanted to be a dancer or an actor. Being in entertainment, you have to have a back-up plan--you always need something to fall back on.

What kind of dancing do you do?
Everything! Tap, jazz, ballet, hip-hop, gymnastics--you name it, I've done it.

Is it true that you're also into puppeteer?
Yes. I started when I was little and I was bored in my room. I got into playing with puppets. I got a major kick out of it and still do. I still do puppet shows when I get a chance.

Where do you see yourself five years from now?
Still making music. The Backstreet Boys will never break up--we'll always be a group, but maybe we'll do different things at different times.

What's you're favorite Backstreet Boys' song?
I'd have to say Quit Playin' Games (With My Heart). I never get sick of that one. But We've Got it Goin' On we've been singing that one over and over and it can be like, enough already!

When you're at home, does your famil treat you differently?
No way. When I go home, it's just like, I'm a 17-year-old guy and if I have to take the garbage out, I'm gonna take it out.

Do you take anything from home on the road with you?
I take my video games. I usually have my Nintendo 64 or my PlayStation.

Since you've traveled all over the world, what's the strangest food you've ever eaten?
Oh man, we were in Thailand and they have the spiciest food! It was so hot--the spiciest in my life!

Do you have a girlfriend?
No. It doesn't work. If we were always in the States, it might work, but we go to Asia and Europe for months at a time. But we definitely like girls--that's for sure!

Which Backstreet Boys has the worst temper? Who's the most flirty? We asked the guys to tell on each other--and they did!

Biggest Flirt: That's A.J.!
Biggest Shopper: A.J. again. "I shop more than most women," he says.
Most Easygoing: Howie, definitely.
Worst Temper: Everybody says it's Kevin, but he says, "I'm just a perfectionist. I need everything to go perfectly."
