Romancing the Backstreet Boys

(BB, November 1997)

Here are some kind of hitns on what really makes Nick, Kevin, Brian, A.J., and Howie swoon.

What is the most romantic thing someone has ever done for you? Was it buying you flowers or tickets to your favorite concert, bring you a homemade lunch to school, or something as simple as leaving a note in your locker? When BB caught up with the Orlando, Florida-based babes Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, A.J. McLean, and Kevin Richardson, the guys who send your hearts into gaga-mode with songs like Quit Playing Games (With my Heart) from their just-out U.S. debut CD, we wondered what they each consider to be the most romantic thing a girl has ever done for them. And all five bandmates had special moments to share with us.

Kevin tells us that the most romatic thing a girl ever did for him was give him a little tender-loving care when he was not feeling well. "I was sick on time and the girl I was dating made homemade chicken noodles soup," Kevin, 25, says, proving the old cliche that a way to a man's heart is through his stomach! "She called her mother and got the recipe and made it. She also baked cookies for me and brought them to me."

Picking a special romantic moment in the past was not as easy for Howie as it was for Kevin. That's because Howie, who turned 24 on August 22, has found more than one girl who has wanted to make him feel special. "I think that I've had two situations," Howie says. "When I aws a kid--I don't know if this is romantic, but it was very sweet--I was in sixth grade or seventh, and a girl in my school had a crush on me. And for Valentine's Day, she gave me a big heart with chocolates, and it said 'Will you be my Valentine?'" As for his more grown-up crushes, howie adds, "And I've had girls ho will cook dinner for me or have a little picnic."

Howie, however, is not the only Backstreet Boy that ranks picnics at the top of his Most Romantic Moments list. Brian tells us that a picnic is definitely the way to go if you want to impress him. "I had a girl prepare a picnic for me one time when we went to a lake area, and it was cool," says 22-year-old Brian.

Deciding what's been romantic for Nick was a cinch. This 17-year-old tells BB, "I had a girl buy me a Chicago Bulls jersey." When Nick answered this, we were not hte only ones who seemed perplexed--Brian was a bit baffled by Nick's idea of romance, too! "That's romantic?" Brian asks Nick. But standing his ground, Nick explains that he thought the jersey gesture was romantic, because instead of giving him something he would never use, this girl knew what he loved. "I love the Chicago Bulls!" he says.

You have to admit, it doesn't take too much to please the Backstreet Boys. But while some girls have bought these guys gifts or cooked for them, A.J. doesn't remember any of these things as being the most romantic thing a girl has ever done for him. This 19-year-old thinks romance is simpler than that. Being romantic doesn't need to cost anything of involve huge efforts, it can just be spontaneous. So, without a doubt, A.J. says that the coolest thing a girl ever did was to "sing to me."

After spending all of his time singing for millions of fans, A.J. was touched when someone decided to give him a song for a change. "It's nice to ahve someone sing tome, instead of having me sing to a girl," he shares. And the one girl who did that left quite an impression on him. "She actually sang to me, and it was really good, and I was like, 'Wow!'" he says. You have to agree, that girl was pretty smart.
