Randy Jones is in charge of security for the Backstreet Boys tour. He has also handled security for New Kids on the Block and Elton John and was a bodyguard for former football player Joe Montana.
What's your job like?
I'm part of a six-man team, and basically, we get the Boys from point A to point B safely and as quickly as possible. We also make sure the backstage areas at the concerts are secure.
Who gets to go backstage?
Occasionally, some of the band's friends will be back there, but mainly everyone is part of the production crew: roadies, security, catering. Sometimes fans who've own contests get to come backstage.
Has anyone ever tried to trick you with a phony backstage pass?
Yeah, but I'm too sharp for that.
When is your job the toughest?
After the show. Some fans leave the show before it's over and line up their cars as close to the backstage gate as possible. When the band leaves, they try to follow us. Some fans can get very aggressive.
When do you get to relax?
When I know everyone is on the bus and it's secure.
Would you ever want to sing backup for the Boys?
A few times they've tried to call me out on stage, but they know I won't go for it.
Do you hang out with the band?
Sure. We go to the movies or bowling or to an arcade--normal things they would do at home.
Are you like the world's greatest babysitter?
Umm, yeah. (laughs)
