Smash Hits: If you could be on the cover of Smash Hits with anyone, who would it be?
Nick: (pauses and sighs--he's very tired at the moment) I dunno. Bryan Adams. He's really cool and I like his music.
SH: What did you get in the post this morning?
N: Oh, I didn't pick up anything. Did any of the other Boys get anything? No. Sometimes we get fan mail. It depends where we are because we're always travelling. I try to reply to mine personally.
SH: Have you ever been in a helicopter?
N: No, never. I wouldn't like it either--I don't think they're very safe and I hate flying. It's a big problem, in a way, because we do so much travelling, but I've kind of gotten used to it. But I still dread flying. I just try to sleep through the whole flight.
SH: Who's your worst enemy?
N: I don't have a worst enemy and the group doesn't either. I'm glad I don't have enemies.
SH: Do you believe in things like life after death?
N: I believe there's someting else besides this when you die. I haven't a clue what it's like--I haven't got a mental picture of it or anything. I just believe there's something there.
SH: What's the most annoying thing anyone's ever done to you?
N: I dunno. I'm glad that people don't tend to say anything annoying to us, and if they did I probably wouldn't tell you.
(We press him a little bit)
N: Sometimes the guys say stuff like, "fix your dance moves" to me--small things like that--and I get really P.O.'d.
SH: When was the last time you were really horrible to someone?
N: (he has another yawn) Like I said, I don't believe in being mean to anyone. I'm a really peaceful person. That's something I get from my family.
SH: Have you ever sent anyone a bunch of flowers?
N: No, never. I've picked flowers for my mum 'cos I couldn't afford to send them. Has anyone sent me flowers? Apart from the fans, no one has.
SH: If you held in your hands the book that held all the answers of the univers, what colour would the cover be?
N: (after a pause of several centuries) It'd be black. I think that book that extravagant or that big would have to represent the universe, which is dark. It'd be the colour of space.
SH: Who in the band annoys you the most?
N: Hmmm. (laughing) I don't think anyone really annoys me. OK, well let's put it this way, I'd rather not say it, because if I did, when they read the interview they'd be really P.O.'d with me.
SH: What's the most exotic thing you can cook?
N: Fish. I cook it on a pan. I have it just basically by itself--when I go to the Florida Keys the fish is really beautiful.
SH: What's the most expensive thing you ever bough, and how much was it?
N: Err, I can't really say. Probably a gold chain that cost about $300. I bought it for myself, yeah. How come I haven't bought a flash car and a house? Well, I haven't got a driving license, and I'd rather stay at home with my parents.
SH: Do you get chatted up a lot?
N: Chatted up? What's that? No, I don't get chatted up much. We're very busy all the time, so no one gets the chance to talk to us that much. That's OK--it can be cool to have a little bit of privacy.
SH: Have you ever cheated on a girlfriend?
N: Hmm...I'm not gonna say yes, and I'm not gonna say no.
SH: What's the cheapest present you've ever given anyone?
N: Usually when I buy a present, I make sure it's something that means a lot. I guess it may be cheap, or whatever, but if it means something to the person receiving it, it isn't cheap to them.
SH: What was the last thing that made you angry?
N: (sighs) Probably, erm...I dunno. I can't quite think of what the last thing was. I'm pretty laid back.
SH: Would you be a fan of the group if you weren't it in?
N: A fan? I dunno. I like our music--it's pretty cool, so I might be a fan. I guess I'd buy our records.
SH: What do you wear to bed?
N: Underwear. A T-shirt and boxers. That's about it.
SH: What's the most drunk you've ever been?
N: Drunk? I've never been drunk. I'm under-age, so I'd get myself in trouble if I drank. It's never interested me. I've heard from some people that drinking isn't bad for your health if you keep it in moderation, but I personally don't like it.
SH: How often do you shave?
N: That's a weird question. I just shave a small amount about once a week. I don't need to shave any more than that really.
