I Met a Backstreet Boy!

(Super Teen, February 1999)

"On the morning of February 21, 1998, I woke up excited because that night I was going to see the Backstreet Boys perform! Little did I know that just a few hours later, my dream of a lifetime would come true...I would meet a Backstreet Boy!

"At 11am, my best friend Tricia and I headed to Disney's House of Blues in Orlando. The concert was to start at 9pm with gates opening at 8pm...at 12pm we realized what a long wait we had, and began to wonder how to make the eight hours pass quickly...when out of nowhere Nick Carter came walking over! He didn't have any bodyguards or security guards with him so security didn't believe who he was, even with 100 screaming girls running after him! Poor Nick had to dig out his driver's license to prove his identity and after a few minutes of strugging was finally let in!

"About 30 minutes later--we were still shocked by seeing Nick! We heard screaming coming from the Virgin Megastore just a few feet away. We all thought, 'Get your cameras, let's go!' Sure enough, there was Brian Littrell and a few minutes later Kevin Richardson! They couldn't stop to sign autographs because security was filing them in quickly. We watched the gates and a few minutes later, they opened to let A.J. McLean it! All of the fans simultaneously yelled, 'Hi A.J.!' He said, 'Hi' and smiled.

"We were all so happy--after all, we had just gotten some really good pix of the Boys! A few minutes later, we got even happier when one of the coolest security guards came over and started talking to us. He saw that we were loaded down with bears and other gifts for the Boys. We asked if we should give them to him, and he said to bring them to the concert and an announcement would tell us what to do with them. So I held on tightly to the white bear I had for Brian. Then the security guard told my friends and me that if we had notes for them, he'd personally deliver them to the Boys' dressing rooms! We smiled and handed him our notes and off he went.

"My friend Tricia and I were thinking, 'It can't get much better than this,' but it was about to! When our security guard friend returned, he told us that Boys would be doing a Meet 'N Greet autograph signing with fans! I kept thinking, 'No way!' and dug out my CD cover, which I so badly wanted autographed. We sat there just waiting for the doors to open, but everytime they did, a security guard walked out and we could hear the Boys rehearsing 'As Long as You Love Me.'

"A few moments later, we heard screams coming from around the corner. The fans took off excet for us--[the security guard] told us they were coming out front to do an autograph signing. The screams were probably just a trick. We were wrong and disappointed when the others came back with autographs.

"We were so mad that the security gurad [was wrong]...but minutes later he redeemed himself by telling us, 'The Boys are still back there, see if you can...' We didn't hear the rest. We just ran and, sure enough, around the corner were the Backstreet Boys posing for a photo shoot. When they were done taking pictures, Tricia and I stayed with a few other fans, we were silent from disbelief! Then we all gasped! Brian was walking right over to us! He talked to us and signed my CD cover! A few minutes later, as the B-Rokster walked away, I realized, '[Silly] me, I left my camera behind!'

"Hours later, we were in the concert have the greatest time. I was front row, center stage! when they sang my fave BSB song, 'I'll Never Break Your Heart,' I actually began to cry. I was so moved! Brian actually saw me crying and walked in front of me and got down on his knees and said, 'I'll never make you cry' and motioned for me to stop crying by wiping his eye. Then he reached out and touched my hand and flashed that beautiful smile.

"I didn't want that night to end, but unfortunately it did. Even though I didn't get five autographs on my CD, I got one. And it was the one [because it] belonged to the Boy who sang to me! If they're reading this, I want to give a shout out to Jay, the cool security guard for helping us try to meet them, and of course Brian, who made my day! Thanks! Now I can always say, 'I met a Backstreet Boy!'"
