The Jefferson Starship Site Presents:

Jefferson Starship Acoustic Explorer @ House of Blues

Boston, MA, March 5, 1998

Review by Mason T. Weinrich

Caught the JS sets at the Boston HOB last night. Simply incredible. This is the first time I've seen JS since the mid-70's version and I was blown away. They sounded terrific, had a really good set list (which I didn;t write down) mixing old and new stuff (as you have seen in the other posts). Diana Mangano is super - she really adds a lot of energy onstage, and her voice meshes well with Paul's. She is also clearly a fan - near the end of the 1st set, someone called out for "Hey Frederick" and she looked over and mouthed to him "My favorite - but we never do it!", pouted and looked at Paul.

Surprises for the eveneing included a really good version of Lather, a smooth run-through of Millenium Beyond, an evening ending encore of Fat Angel (with great bass playing by Jack taking it through), and a premiere song which we were not give the name of. Paul explained it as "a continuation of the Lightning Rose saga begun in Shadowlands" where she gets older and more vengeful. It was a classic, driving Paul tune - perhaps with a more slightly "punkish" edge to it (hard to do in an acoustic venue!). As at other shows, Paul smoked on stage but not that much, drank what appeared to be tea the first set, and straight Vodka the 2nd. HOB in Boston holds about 300-350, I'd say it was 1/2-2/3 full.

Quote of the night - Paul dedicated Millenium Beyond to the tress - "for the political work they have done with Sonny Bono and Michael Kennedy. Maybe we should all buy our congressmen ski lift tickets while there is still some snow left!"

It was a great evening.
