“I don’t get this, girl.”
“You don’t have to get it, just accept it.”
“But I just never saw any of this coming. Everybody was under the impression that things between the two of you were fine.”
“Well, everybody was wrong. Everybody was only asking Brian, everybody just assumed. So, everybody got thrown for a loop.”
“Got that right.”
Ann was starting to get annoyed, “Nick, look, unless you’ve got something else to say, I need to go.”
“Wait!”
“I’m listening.”
“God, A, if only you could see what this is doing to Brian. He’s miserable; he’s making us miserable. He needs you so bad right now.”
“Is that all you have to say?” Ann asked somewhat coldly.
“Who are you? The Annie I know cared, she gave a damn. That’s not the same person I’m talking to now.”
“You know what Nick, If you knew me at all you’d stop trying to be matchmaker and start being my friend.”
“I’m trying to be your friend, being with Brian is what’s best for you. That’s all I want for you, the best,” Nick didn’t understand how she could think he wasn’t being her friend.
“Nick, I know what’s best for me. I loved Brian and I’m not an idiot. I wouldn’t break his heart and mine without a damn good reason.”
“Okay, so what’s this ‘damn good reason?’” Nick’s voice dripped with sarcasm.
She heard it and got fed up, “Call me when you grow up,” she spat before she hung up.
Nick stared at the phone, dumbfounded. “What’s gotten into this girl?’ he thought to himself.

“Hey, Brian, I’m making a McDonald’s run. What do you want?”
“Sure, AJ.”
“Then I’m going to walk to Japan.”
“Okay, man.”
“I’m going so I can get some water because the building’s on fire and I have to put it out.”
“That’s great, Bone.”
AJ let out an exasperated sigh. Brian was completely out of it.
“Brian. Brian. Brian!”
“What? Why’d you yell at me? You scared the crap out of me!”
“Because you didn’t hear not one word I said. You’ve got to get yourself together. Nobody is worth all the pain you’re putting yourself through.”
Brian jumped up with more life in him than he had in the last 48 hours and stared harshly at AJ, “Don’t ever say that! She’s worth everything.”
Brian’s reaction troubled him deeply, but AJ put his acting skills to work and didn’t let it show. “If she’s worth so much then what happened?”
“We broke up.”
A fed up AJ raised his hands heavenward and prepared to leave, “Thank you, Einstein! Maybe when you stop speaking in monosyllables, we’ll talk.”
“’We broke up’ is three syllables, not one. And you know that word is too big for you, anyway.”
“Brian, buddy, is that really you?”
He sighed, “In the flesh, the hurting kind.”
“Tell me what happened,” AJ prodded softly as he sat down next to him.
Brian recounted the past days’ events to his friend, managing to finish without getting too choked up or angry.
“But can’t you guys try to work it out? You could call more; she could spend more of her vacations with you when you’re on tour. The two of you could fix this, it’s something every entertainer has to encounter and overcome.”
“I know that, that’s why I still think she’s not telling me something.”
“You’ve got to go to her. Let her know that you won’t give up on the relationship so easily.”
“I would, but--“
AJ quickly cut him off, “But what? You just finished telling me that she was worth anything. How can you just admit defeat lying down?”
“She said goodbye.”
AJ’s mouth hung open. “She said what?”
“The one thing she’s never told me, goodbye.”
Having slightly recovered from the shock, AJ counseled, “I know that’s a hard blow to take, but if you really think she’s the one, you can’t just let her go. Give it a try. The worse she could do is say no.”
“That’s just it. I don’t know if I could bear to hear that word.” Brian turned to his younger friend, lost and hopeless; and it showed.
