The envelope had arrived the day before but he had disregarded it as just another fan letter. Today its twin had appeared in the mail that had been forwarded from his home in Orlando, something he always did to stay connected to loved ones while he traveled North America on the Backstreet Boys tour.
Curiosity gripped his mind now. He sat at the table staring at the two envelopes in front of him. Both bore the same fluid feminine script. His name appeared as the addressee. Both had a faded Boston postmark – one more recent than the first. There was no return address only a simple "J" in its place.
"I’m sure the Unabomber wouldn’t bother to write on fancy stationary," a voice mocked. "Not to mention, he’s in jail now and probably not a fan."
"Thanks, Rok," he retorted glaring at his friend and bandmate Brian Littrell.
"I’d be a bit more worried about how this person found your home address." It was Brian’s dark-haired cousin Kevin Richardson.
"I’m sure the sender is harmless," Howie Dorough interjected picking up one of the envelopes as he took a seat beside his friend.
A.J. McLean ran a hand through his dark hair as glanced toward the blonde who had just entered the ‘room’. "Wanna add your interpretation, Nick?"
The man shook his head. "I just want to know what’s in it."
"Well, we’ll have to find out later," Kevin said as the bus pulled to a stop in front of the CoreStates Center. "Right now we have soundcheck."

It wasn’t until later that night in his hotel suite that A.J. turned his attention back to the letters – and even then, it was by accident.
He’d just come from the shower a white towel secured around his waist. Reaching for a pair of flannel boxers, the pale blue envelopes caught his brown eyes. He pulled on the boxers and turned on MTV for background noise.
Sitting on the bed, his eyes scanned the perfectly
formed script again. His forefinger traced his name
as he turned the envelope in his hand. Something
inside A.J. McLean told him that the contents would
mean more than anything else he’d ever read. After
inhaling deep breath of courage to swallow the
apprehensive thoughts in his mind, he broke the seal.
