Wednesday night, one month later
Maddie raced home from class to get ready for her date. She had a horrible day and she was hoping this date would relax her. She looked at her watch.."Shit it's 9pm...I am going to be late." She raced down the street and took the stairs to her apartment 2 at a time. She unlocked her door and ran inside. Her phone was ringing and she dove for it..
"Hello..." she answered breathlessy.
"Hi M...how are you?" Howie asked
"D, I am great...give me a couple of minutes I just got in.."
"Well I will call you in five minutes...don't be late for our date." Howie said.

Maddie hung up the phone and smiled. Howie and she had a long standing date. Every Wednesday they would pick something to do and do it together. No matter where Howie was. Today he was in Italy and they were going to watch Something About Mary.
Maddie ran to jump into her pj's. She slipped on her boxers and sweatshirt and made sure she put her wool socks on. She spread her snacks out on the table in front of her. There was licorice and gummy bears and popcorn.
The phone rang..."Hi Howie..."
"Hey yourself...Okay I am starting the movie..." Howie said.
They counted to 3 and both pressed play on their vcrs...Throughout the movie they talked and laughed and acted as thought they were in the same room. All their friends thought they were nuts and their phone bills were sky high but to them it was the closest thing to hanging out that they could do.

After the movie they talked about their week...
”Well Italy is beautiful..I wish you were here so I could share the villas, and the art galleries with someone who would appreciate it, AJ is fun to be with but her doesn't understand Iris by Van Gough or the Sistine Chapel." Howie laughed.
“ Well work is hell of course, but I aced my Poli Sci exam and I have a good chance of graduating Magna Cum Laude.”
"Maddie, that is wonderful..I am so proud of you, I knew you would do fine on that exam." said Howie reffering to the late night phone call he had received from Maddie when she was stressing about the exam.
"Well Howie I am wiped out, if I don't hang up I will fall asleep and you will have to hear me snoring." Maddie joked.
"Maddie why don't you go to bed and we can talk...if you fall asleep that's fine I will just hang up. I am feeling really lonely tonight and I need to hear your voice. I need a dose of the outside world." Howie spoke softly.
Maddie curled up in bed with Tequila and told Howie about Ashleigh's new boyfriend who none of them liked.

Howie was in the middle of telling Maddie about AJ's new tattoo when he
heard soft even breathing on the other end of the
phone..."Maddie...Maddie..
Well I guess she is sleeping...Good night beautiful girl I will talk to
you
next Wednesday." Howie hung up the phone and leaned back onto his
pillows.
Their Wednesday night ritual was what kept Howie going. Sometimes late
at
night he would put the Elton John CD on and think of Maddie and the 2
days
they spent together. He knew that he was becoming more attracted to
Maddie
each time they talked and he knew that he couldn't wait to talk to her
next
week. He turned off the light and fell asleep to the strains of Elton
John.
