It's sad that BACKSTREET MANIA has to make a statement like this, but it's unavoidable. Recently, we have had to deal with a situation that no author should ever have to deal with: plagerism.
One of the most popular stories on our site, "All Through The Night", was taken, reworked with some clever additions and subtractions, then posted on the internet under someone else's name. Several of the chapters weren't even altered, save the lead character's name. It's this kind of blatant disregard for another's efforts that has us concerned.
Granted, it's "only fan fiction", but to the person who wrote it, it's more. Authors put much of themselves into a story when they create it. Something that cannot, no matter hard someone tries, be duplicated. It's personal. And this was a personal assault.
Backstreet Fans, in general, are very respectful of one another's work, opinions, efforts, and beliefs. HOWEVER, be warned, there are a few bad eggs in this batch, like in everything else in life. We at BACKSTREET MANIA have decided to launch an "Anti-plagerism" campaign. A campaign that focuses on stopping the copying before it becomes a widespread practice. We realize that most every idea is influenced by pieces before it, but we feel that is no excuse for blatant plagerism. Nor is it an excuse to "steal" an entire plot line in chronological order. We'd like to urge you to be different. Be bold. Be original. Be unique, and be creative.
Help stop plagerism by placing our "Don't Copy" banner on your site. In the future, we'll have several models to choose from, but we'd greatly appreciate your support. We urge you to make your own version of the banner! Do whatever it takes to make your personal statement regarding plagerism.
