When Irish Eyes Are Smiling

Chapter 16

I had planned to call Keavy's parents and ask them for their permission to marry her but it had all happened so fast. The first thing I did when I got into Boston was to call her parents and tell them about the proposal. Her mother cried and her father told me there was no better man for her son then me. They were excited and happy and wished us the best. The second call I made was to the florist shop, I ordered a vase of sweet peas to be sent to our house with a note that simply said "Forever....Yank". I called our house ...our house, I still got goosebumps whenever I said or heard OURS. Her thick irish accent filled the taped message on the answering machine.

You have reached Alex and Keavy's, Alex is currently on tour raising womens' heart beats to dangerous levels and I am at the hospital doing my rounds and learning various ways to help stop the damage that my fiancee has caused to these millions of women, please leave us a message....

I laughed as I listened to her message, it was obviosly recorded right after our goodbye at the airport because she had called me her fiancee. It was the first time I had heard her call me that and it was music to heal my heart with. I turned my attention to unpacking, hoping that it would take my mind off of her.

It was well after midnight when I trudged into my hotel room and flopped on the bed. The first show of the tour was always the roughest, the sound wasn't quite perfect, our choreography was a tad off but as always the minute we hit the stage, heard the screaming and chanting and saw the sea of people we came alive. It wasn't until Spanish Eyes that the reality hit me. It hit me that for the next four months I would sing words of love to complete strangers, I would look out into the crowd and wouldn't see the emerald eyes that I became lost in everytime I looked into them. I wouldn't be able to come home and kiss her, I would fall asleep with my arms empty, her hair which had served as my arms' blanket for the past 3 months would rest on her pillow alone. I rubbed my eyes with the back of my hand, trying to chase away the tears that were beginning to form and turned over on my side to reach for the room service menu. I saw the blinking light and frantically dialed the message number.

"Hi Yank

It's me...I am home now" her voice cracked with emotion "I am sitting here in bed, staring at the space where you should be and trying to be strong. Mah and Daddy just called and are so excited about us getting married. The flowers are beautiful." Soft sniffing filled the phone "I promised I wouldn't cry...aww Alex I miss you so bad, I am trying to be strong, really I am but for some reason I am being a floozy fanny, I miss you Alex and I hope your show went well. I am up if you want to call, please call me Alex...I love you"

I reached for the phone and dialed our number, this was definatly going to be harder then we both had anticipated.
