I Don't Care Who You Are

----Chapter 43----

Nick stumbled through the cluttered living room, stubbing his toe on one of the numerous pieces of furniture strategically placed throughout the room. "Son of a BITCH!" he hissed. He crouched and grabbed his toe, muttering to himself before continuing on his quest to the back door. With each step it was like he was walking back into himself, his persona, the guy who had went IN to the room with Angela. When the cold air from outside hit him he considered heading back upstairs to her, too. What was he thinking before he left? “I really really REALLY like you?” The clean, fresh smell of the mid-western air was inviting and he needed to chill out for a bit. He thought to himself, bitterly, "A cold shower would be good, but I guess a cold picnic table will do."

When his feet hit the cold planks of the porch, he suddenly remembered he was barefoot. He pattered quickly across the yard to the picnic table and sat down on top of it, resenting his chivalrous choice even more. "It's not like she didn't WANT to," he thought. "Hell, she was more for it than I was." He swiped his hair, frustrated. "She was practically humping my LEG." His mind was racing and searching for someone to blame for his misfortune…..Brian! Brian and the big speech he'd given him outside the bathroom. Then his thoughts turned to Kevin and his no-sex rule. "Prick," he thought. As a shiver ran through him, he laughed at how pathetic he felt and buried his head in his hands. "God, I am so lame," he verbalized.

The backdoor slammed behind him and Nick turned around, hoping that Angela had followed him downstairs to beg him to come back up. Instead, he was surprised to see Kevin spotlighted by the moon. "Hey," Kevin called out as he walked slowly toward him.

"Hey," Nick replied, disappointed.

Kevin ignored his less-than-enthusiastic greeting. "Normally I'd be pissed at you for wakin' me up, but I just wanted to see what was goin' on. Everything cool?" He was now standing beside Nick and nudged him over so he could sit beside him on the table, warranting an icy glare.

"I'm cool," Nick snapped defensively. “Very cool,” he repeated, shivering.

Kevin sat quietly, wondering what to say next. Nick was obviously unhappy about something and he pretty much figured that Angela had said “no,” bless her heart. "So, I take it she said the N-word?" he asked cautiously.

Nick glared at him again and smirked. "No!” he said defensively. “In fact, she said 'I Want You' loud and clear. So there!"

Kevin was intrigued. There was no way in hell that Nick would refuse such an offer. He'd been broken up with his girlfriend for three months and had only picked up one girl that he knew of while on tour. It had been a really bad experience, too -- way too wild for his taste – especially since he'd been so down on himself lately. "Soooo… you wanna talk about it?" he offered, trying not to sound condescending.

"We had a rule, that's all," Nick retorted.

Kevin snickered. "Yeah, whatever, Nick. That rule meant shit to you and you know it. Hell, I knew it when I made it."

Reluctantly, Nick smiled what Kevin always termed a 'shit-eatin' grin.' "You're not buying that, huh?"

"Huh uh," Kevin replied, shoving him a little. "You're a sneaky little shit when you want your way."

Nick laughed and rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "Yeah, I am pretty sneaky," he agreed. He glanced at Kevin out of the corner of his eye and raised an eyebrow. "But I'm still not at AJ's level."

"Don't worry, you'll get there," Kevin assured him. "You've had years of training but you still have a couple more to go." Kevin was relieved the tension in the conversation was gone, but he was also determined to find out exactly what had happened. He was still floored that Nick was having doubts about deflowering Angela, when his earlier intentions had been so obvious. "Wellll?" he asked, slowly.

Nick grimaced. "Brian," he whined. "He fuckin' sabotaged me with his good guy crap." He thought that answer would satisfy Kevin, and he wasn't about to tell him that he'd solicited Brian's opinion because of his own doubts. And he definitely wasn’t going to tell him it probably wouldn’t have mattered if he’d have talked to Brian or not.

"Brian, huh?" Kevin repeated. "That boy shoulda been a preacher."

"Yeah, right," mumbled Nick sarcastically.

Kevin's mind went to Angela suddenly, wondering how she was feeling at the moment. "What did you say to her when you left?"

"I just told her I had to go to the bathroom, man," Nick answered. "I wasn't going to make a big deal out of it or anything." Yeah, right. No big deal. Just beg her to let you still sleep with her.

"Was she okay?" Kevin prodded. "I mean. Did you hurt her feelings or what?"

Nick looked at him, unsure of what to say. He didn’t want to talk about it. It was bad enough that it had just happened and he didn’t want to relive it. "No,” he lied. “She was cool with it.” He stared at Kevin, wondering if he would believe him.

"Wow," Kevin exclaimed. “I thought she’d be a little upset since Kim Ann and Sandra were on her about it all day.” He eyed Nick curiously. “Did she, uh, grab you by any chance?”

"What?" Nick asked as if he'd lost his mind.

"Did she grab you?" Kevin repeated, enjoying Nick’s reaction.

"What do you mean?" Nick asked again.

"Did… she… grab… you?" Kevin repeated a final time, with made up sign language gestures.

"What, my…my…dick?" Nick asked, confused, a horrified expression on his face.

"Yeah," Kevin replied, with a locker room-type laugh.

"No!" Nick answered quickly, blushing.

"Well," Kevin elaborated, "Kim Ann and Sandra dared her to. That's how inexperienced she is, Nick. She’s never even touched a guy."

"They what?!?" Nick missed the inexperienced part that Kevin had tried to sway him into hearing and was furious that Kim Ann and Sandra would do such a thing to her - or him. It was none of their damned business what they did. "That pisses me off, man. It’s none of those bitches’ business."

"Well, the important thing is, she didn't do it," Kevin pointed out. "That's a good thing, right?"

Nick shot a dirty look at him, remembering his earlier sacrifice. "Depends on how you look at it, Kev, dontcha think?"

Kevin chuckled. "Well, yeah," he said, raising his eyebrows. "I just meant that she's not a robot or someone who does whatever her friends tell her to do. And….she's not a skank."

"Whatever," Nick snapped, pondering what would have happened if Angela had grabbed him. It probably would’ve changed everything, especially when he would've inevitably found out later on that it was on a dare. He didn't like the idea of her touching him just because it was suggested by her friends. A pang of guilt shot through him as he considered it, though. Half the reason he'd wanted to sleep with her in the first place was the fact that she was a virgin and he knew that AJ would think it was the coolest thing in the world.

Kevin and Nick sat quietly for a while before Kevin sighed loudly and stood up. "I'm hittin' it. And you need to get some sleep, too."

Nick looked at Kevin desperately. "What do I do? Do I go back up there?" He knew he had her permission, but he was completely confused now and didn’t want to grovel any more to her.

Kevin stretched and answered nonchalantly. "Here's what you do. You go up there, slip into the room quietly, get into bed beside her real calm-like. Then you just pull her close and don't say anything. That way you won't have to give a big lengthy explanation and she'll know it wasn't something she did or didn't do."

Nick nodded slowly as he pondered Kevin's advice. "Yeah," he agreed, squinting. "That'll work." He still wondered if it actually would work, being that he and Angela had already discussed what had happened, but it was better than sleeping without her…and the mattress.

They walked to the house together and Kevin crawled back onto the couch. "Go get her, tiger. Just make sure you wake up early enough to get her out of your room before 'you know who' gets here."

Nick continued toward the stairs. "Whatever," he snipped.

Kevin smiled as he watched Nick head up the stairs. "Nicky's not so little anymore," he thought as he laid his head on the pillow and closed his eyes.

Nick slipped into the bedroom quietly and shut the door slowly so he wouldn't wake Angela. He stood motionless, peering at her through the darkness. "Good, she's still asleep," he thought as he edged closer, planning his strategy for climbing in beside her unnoticed.

Gingerly, he pulled back the covers and slipped onto the mattress, easing in behind her. He inched toward her slowly and slipped his arm over her body, snuggling up to her gradually. He smiled to himself as he buried his face in her hair and breathed in a trace of her cologne. It was unrecognizable to him, but he liked its soft, powdery scent. His frustration and confusion dissipated and he felt sure again that he’d made the right decision.

As Angela instinctively moved closer to him in her sleep, he smiled again. "Kevin is a genius," he thought, nuzzling her gently. "A genius."
