Kim Ann stared across the table at Nick, who was sitting with his mother. They had decided, after much arguing that neither wanted to pull the twins into the middle of a nasty, publiscized court trial so instead they were metting with the mediator, a court appointed mediator who would listen to both parties and then advise the judge on which direction to rule.
Nick lowered his eyes and fiddled with the band on his finger. Alex, Molly, Kim Ann and his initials were all engraved on it along with the date that he had proposed to her. It was his family ring and he had not yet taken it off, for that meant that he would have given up on them being a family, and he was not ready to admit that.
"Hello, I am Lawrence Smith, the mediator. We will start this morning with Mr Carter's attorney and this afternoon listen to Ms Hearty's argument.

Kim Ann and Kevin held hands as Nick's attorney coloured them as adulterous lovers who snuck behind Nick's back to see each other, who ignored their children to see each other, which was not true. His main argument was the fact that Kim Ann had ignored her children's needs by becoming a surrogate and abandoning them while she was pregnant.
"I had complications, I didn't want to leave my children, Nick you bastard, you know how devestated I was" Kim Ann stood up and screamed.
"MS. HEARTY, there will no outburts, wait until your lawyer has his turn." The mediator sternly warned.
Kevin helped her sit down and stroked her hair, and whispered calming words to her. Nick watched the two interact and his heart ached. He saw the love in her eyes, it was much brighter than the love that he had ever seen in her eyes for him. It cut a little deeper into his heart.

Kevin squeezed Kim Ann's hand as the lawyer got ready to present his surprise to Nick. "Mr. Carter, you say that your girlfriend was the one having an affair, you say that my client is acting irresponsible in front of the children. I ask you sir, how would you explain these" The attorney threw the stack of pictures on the table and Nick started to shake as he realised he was caught. The pictures showed Nick kissing various women, in plain sight of his children. "Is this not disturbing to your children? Their mother is in the hospital and you are bedding young women, not their mother, in front of them. I would say that was negligent"
Nick buried his face in his hands.
