Blur Concert Reviews

October 24th 1997, North Shore Events Centre

Review by Beatrix

We managed to get right up the front for the support band. They were local talent Darcy Clay and his backing band. They were really good and a great complement to Blur. Darcy of course came out and sang a 'moving tribute' to Princess Di, something he called "Candle in the Wind '97", that sounded vaguely familiar. He played about a 25 minute set and then left the stage. At this point I got out of the crowd and waited half an hour for Blur to come out.
I found a perfect Graham viewing spot at the side of the stage, just before they came out (Alex bringing his cup of tea!), and launched into Beetlebum, with Damon on Acoustic. Graham was wearing a maroon Harvard College t-shirt, cream pants and black sneakers, Damon was wearing a blue t-shirt, white pants and white sneakers. Alex was wearing perfectly rolled-up jeans, a blue shirt and a maroon jumper. And Dave could have been naked, because we could hardly see him behind his drums.
They played around 20 songs :
Beetlebum, Theres No Other Way, MOR, Movin' On, Country Sad Ballad Man, This is a Low, I'm Just a Killer for Your Love, Death of a Party, Chemical World, Chinese Bombs, Badhead, Bank Holiday, The Universal, On Your Own, Polished Stone, Advert, Globe Alone, Encore: Parklife, Girls and Boys.....and Song 2
This is just about the right order. There was probably another encore song. Damon kept peppering us with comments before songs, like before this is a low "This is a song about living on a island. That's what we all have in common. We live on an island", or Chinese Bombs "We're going to play a slow song now" and that they were going to play one of their older and more flamboyant songs before The Universal.
There were some interesting moments like when a girl dived onto the stage trying to get to Alex, when Damon semi-stage dived (he was leaning out off two boxes) and Song 2, where the place went mad, understandably. All in all, a great concert, and I managed to get the guitar string Graham broke during Chinese Bombs. What a night....

November 1st 1997. Monash Uni, Meblourne, Australia

Review by ME!!

On Saturday November 1st Blur played in Melbourne, Australia for the first time ever. They played at Chisholm Hall at Monash University in Caulfield.
The doors opened at about 6:00pm and by about 8:15 the support group who were 'The Kiljoys' were on. They finished up at 8:45 and then after a long 45 minute wait, onto the stage walked on Graham Coxon, Alex James, Dave Rowntree and then Damon Albarn. Damon first commented on the Melbourne Cup and then blur started the night of with Beetlebum, with Damon playing acoustic guitar. The lads all looked fantastic. Damon was his same energetic and jumpy self, Alex looked cool with a fag in his mouth (of course), Dave was busy with his drums and Graham...hmmmmm Graham he looked Brilliant. He was wearing cream coloured pants, a blue Levis T-Shirt, his Airwalks and to my surprise he was wearing his glasses. Although the pleasure of seeing him with his glasses on didn't last long because by about the 5th song he just threw them off . And they landed on stage somewhere. Blur then played MOR, There's No Other Way, Bad Head, Movin' On Advert then Chemical World (This is not in the exact order, I can't seem to remember the order of the songs, I was too busy staring at Graham).
The guys then played Coping, Bank Holiday, Girls & Boys, Chinese Bombs, Popscene, Globe Alone and Country Sad Ballad Man with Damon again playing the acoustic guitar. They then played This is a Low before leaving the satge for a quick break. They came back with a brass section and played The Universal, Parklife, On Your Own and of course they ended with Song 2 which sent the crowd MAD. After Song 2 the guys left and that was. The end of a fantastic blur concert. And one of the most enticipated concerts of my life!
